How To Keep Safe In The Winter Season

I love snow

I love snow. I love anything surrounding the festive season, however the disruption and dangerous conditions snow and black ice can cause make it a dangerous season for both pedestrians and drivers.

So what are the most effective ways of dealing with the snow?, Wait it out?, wrap up in gloves, hats and snow trowels? All very good ideas but some methods of dealing with the snow are more effective than others.

Grit or salt?

Grit is usually made out of rock salt. To get the most effective use out of grit, local governments will often grit the road before heavy snow falls. The reason they do this is the rock salt can take time to work, and by applying it to the roads, the traffic aids the process by gently crushing the salt Into fine granules.

This is why side roads always seem to be the worst effected as the salt is not carried as freely. The grit may also contain sand which will not melt the snow but will add traction to the tyres and pavements making it easier to travel.

Clearing Your Driveway

Perhaps on the most time consuming, and annoying tasks is clearing your driveway of snow. Depending on the size of your driveway depends on the method you will use. For larger driveways you may want to consider hiring a snow plow. Checking local papers or maybe asking your neighbours will get you a reputable service.

If your budget is small or you only have a small drive, then its time to break out the traditional snow shovel and get down for some manual labour. Helping to clear your yard and your own street is a great way to find out about your neighbours, and can promote a great spirit between your neighbourhood.

If clearing your driveway is to daunting, then consider paying neighbourhood kids. Kids love the snow and love earning pocket money even more. Salt may melt your driveway however it stops working at temperatures beyond -8*c.

Its The Law

Depending on the state you live in, it may be the law that you are responsible for clearing the snow from sidewalks within 24 hours of the snow falling. Whether its the law or not, it is the neighbourly thing to do especially if you live in an area where there are elderly people.

Our tip for the season, is to enjoy it safely. Always wrap up warm, clear your sidewalks if you can, and visit any vulnerable neighbours. After all this is the season for sharing and goodwill to all men
