How To Keep Your Job While Dating Someone In The Office
It seems like the workday just keeps getting longer
, due to companies operating with a skeleton workforce due to the economy and cutbacks. Those who are privileged to have a full time job may have found that they are spending more time than ever in the office, so it shouldn't be surprising that office romances often blossom.
It's a fairly natural phenomenon considering how much time we spend interacting with our coworkers, to the chagrin of managers everywhere.
It can be difficult to navigate the office romance professionally, and it may even be against company policy where you work. Even when they are allowed, you are likely to find that your peers and superiors may not be as thrilled about your budding romance as you are. Don't take it personally; everyone knows a story of an office romance that has ended in disaster.
You've decided to move ahead with this relationship, eh? Well here are some things to keep in mind so that you can keep your love life, as well as your professional career in bloom.
1.Try to keep it private. There is at least one gossip in almost every office, and there is nothing any more exciting than an office romance to talk about. It's best to keep your romance under wraps for at least a few months until someone figures it out. Who knows, maybe Dave the accountant isn't as awesome as you thought, so what's the point in fueling the office gossip machine over a two week fling?
2.Save the PDA for your home. I understand that you may be dying to give your new partner a kiss or squeeze, but you really need to contain your hormones at the office, and don't have physical contact with your partner that would not be appropriate for you to have with any of your other officemates. If you get caught, it will make your coworkers uncomfortable and will further alienate you.
3.No love letters. While it is tempting to shoot a quick e-mail to your lover letting them know what an amazing time you had last night, you must resist the temptation. Even if you send it using an e-mail address that is not affiliated with the company, many companies monitor all of your electronic transmissions on company equipment. Your your love affair (and waste of company time) may be common knowledge, and possibly grounds for termination as quickly as you can hit send.
4.No lovers' spats at the office. Even the most stable couple has a disagreement from time to time, but you need to deal with those conflicts at home and not at the office. Things are tricky enough at the office when you disagree with a coworker that you are not emotionally involved with, but it is even worse when that disagreement is with your romantic partner. Your argument could disrupt the office, as well as affect your job performance. Make sure you deal with disagreements privately at home.
5.Accept that you may have to transfer, or even find a new job. When entering an office romance, you really need to be prepared for the worst case scenario. You could be fired, your romance could fail and your ex may set out to destroy your future. After a break-up it may be too hard for you to go to work and see this person day-in and day-out.
On the other hand, things could also go very very well, and you may find yourself saying your I Do's to the love of your life who you met over the water cooler. The problem is that many companies have policies against married couples working together. If you get married, you may have to transfer departments, or even find a new job.
Weigh the risks along with the benefits before diving head-first into a romance that could cost you the current career path that you are on.
