How To Know If You're Shedding Hair
I've found that there's a lot of subtle differences in the terms and phrases used in hair loss. For example, the term shedding often refers more to temporary, seasonal hair loss or accelerated loss due to a temporary but fixable medical condition. In these cases, the shedding will often stop and, with a little help and stimulation, the hair should grow back. But, people will often refer to thinning more as a sort of genetic or long term loss. Thinning seems to be meant morefor long term, permanent loss that isn't aslikely to grow back. Most people believe that thinning is more gradual, but also more lasting.
I get a lot of questions asking about the difference. Examples are: "how do I know if it's shedding or thinning?;" "is it TE or AGA?:" and "when does shed hair grow back?" I'll try to answer these questions in the following article.
Hair Shedding / TE Usually Means More Than 100 Hairs Lost Per Day: TE (or telogen effluvium) is the medical term for shedding. Often, this occurs because of illness, a change of medications, a fall off or change in hormones, or some sort of stress or change in the body. Often, if you can determine what is causing the TE and fix it, you'll notice a lessening in the hair loss a few months later. If you support a healthy scalp and stimulate your follicles, the hair should eventually grow back.
Most often, this type of loss will present itself with sudden and large amounts of shed hair. This is pretty hard to ignore. You'll start to find spent hairs on your clothes, falling into your mouth, all over your floor, and clogging up your shower drain. Technically dermatologist will tell you that any loss over 100 hairs per day for a repetitive amount of time is likely this type of loss. But, I do not recommend that you begin counting hairs. This will drive you crazy and cause you a lot of stress and anxiety.
I find that the best way to handle this is to allow yourself to count only once. When you're going to wash your hair, get one of the little drain plus that will catch the hairs. Collect them, eyeball how big the clump of hair is and then count it. In the future, when you want to see if your shedding is improving or getting worse, eye ball the collection in the drain again. However, you don't want to do this everyday. Recovery for this takes time and you can't measure this day by day or you will drive yourself mad.
Thinning Vs Shedding: (AGA Vs TE): People often want to know the difference between these two types of loss. In general, you won't notice a drastic amount of loss when you have AGA or genetic loss. Instead, what typically happens is that you'll steadily lose a bit more hair each day, but not an overly alarming amount. However, your hair starts to become noticeably thinner because you are no longer able to grow it back quite as well.
Often because of androgens or shrinking hair follicles, you either don't regrow as much or what you do regrow comes in thinner or miniaturized. People often refer to this as peach fuzz. Obviously, this low quality hair doesn't cover your scalp as well or give you as much volume. So, if you're facing this type of loss, you must do two things. You must limit androgens and DHT on your scalp and youmust then stimulate your scalp and hair follicles until you are able to get them to produce normal healthy hairs again.
How do I know all of this? Because I lived it. In my quest to end my hair loss, I looked at my triggers, my iron, my thyroid, my adrenals, my hormones, and my scalp's health. It was a long, hard, frustrating journey which all but wrecked my self esteem but I finally found something that helped quite a bit.
