How To Land A Job: Bend The Rules A Little

Looking for a job can be a long, frustrating and sometimes scary process

. At times it seems there are more potential employees than there are open jobs. If you look at the situation another way, however, a job search can be a great experience. The perfect job may not be waiting, but it's possible that you can make your own perfect opportunity.

The job hunt process is very familiar. You read want ads then mail a resume and hope to get an interview. Until you know one way or the other, you're forced to wait anxiously to hear that you're hired. You and so many other job-seekers know the steps, but the whole process doesn't really fit you. It never hurts to consider solving a problem in a new way.

Don't react, create. No doubt you're used to applying to a job based on a posting for an open position. Cold-calling is a great way to get in touch with companies where you would like to work. With this approach you can potentially find out about brand new openings or just sell yourself for future reference. Knowing current events is great for helping to sell your unique qualifications to an employer.

Don't let hiring guidelines turn you away. Companies often advertise for a position and add specifications for potential employees, such as how many years of experience they should have or specific certifications. For some positions these specifications are important, but for others they are just guidelines. You know if you can perform certain tasks, so don't be afraid to put your name in consideration. Companies teach their employees how things should be done, so initial guidelines are only part of the story. Taking a chance on applying has the benefit of allowing you to sell qualifications that you have that an ad may not have mentioned.

Be innovative in your approach. Adhering to standard rules is only okay if you're getting the most out of the experience. In today's market, it's important to have a presence in the real world as well as online. Furthermore, consider starting your own blog or website to display your skills or joining a reputable job forum where you can network in a brand new way.

There's no right or wrong way to find a job. The key is to use strategies that get results for you. If you're motivated and dedicated, you will discover unique ways to find success.
