. In this article, we shall look at the best method to learn it.

If you want to learn the Twi language, first you need a good Twi book, audio course or interactive software course that teaches grammar and vocabulary. If it is software it should have an integrated recorder feature that allows the learner to practice words and sentences by recording and comparing with the audio from the software. This method can spare you weeks of study. The most abundant Twi learning materials you will find on the Internet are books and audio materials with hours of repeated phrases and drills.

Finding the right training course

If there is a good method with at least 5 hours play time from beginning to end, with grammar and vocabulary drills, audio and visual exercises and games included, you're lucky. It will be sufficient to learn a lot and you'll be able to take control of what you learn, repeating lessons, drills and games, and working to achieve fluency. I suggest you downloadNkyea Twi Primer. It teaches Twi grammar, vocabulary and correct pronunciation with simple everyday sentences and dialogue fragments you always come across. It also urges you to record and compare your sentences with the native speaker in the course. You should also get Florence Abena Dolphyne's book A Comprehensive Course In Twi (Asante) for the Non-Twi Learner'. Florence Abena Dolphyneis a linguistics Professor at the University of Ghana. Her book is very useful, as it shows you all the standard Asante Twi grammar. It is packed with basic to advanced dialogue with references to Asante cultural points such as the Akan naming ceremony, festivals and funerals.

How you should learn

You can study as little as half an hour every day, but you should not stop for extended periods of time. If you do this you would lose the thread and you wouldn't remember what you learned in the preceding lessons sufficiently to build another layer. The best thing would be to work at least 30 minutes a day on each topic, learning grammar, taking note of word order as you go along and repeating each sentence until you can say it properly. The latter techniques is more effective when you are learning with software that has an integrated record and compare feature such asNkyea Twi Primer. You can also pause for short periods in the middle as you learn.

What to do if you stop in the middle

Most people will, during the course of their study, stop for a few days or even a few months, for all kinds of reasons. So, if it happens to you, what should you do to begin again? Open the book, play the CD or launch the software and begin at the last topic you studied. From there, go over the previous topic, do the exercises and play the games that accompany each topic. This will get you back on your feet. Make sure you master the topics sufficiently before you continue. Redo completely every lesson where you failed to get at least 50% in its exercise. If you think you can go on without knowing well every topic or lesson you studied, you are wrong. Better lose a few days of repetition than to see after 2 weeks that you are not confident in your skills and risk abandoning everything.
