How To Leash Train Your Dog

Leash training your dog is important so that you will be able to walk your dog while being in control over her

. Walking your dog is beneficial to your dog's health by increasing its life span. Putting your dog on leash will prevent it from jumping out on strangers on the street who may not have a kind reaction towards her.

It may take several week and months to train your dog before they learn to obey your command. Most dogs allow you to put a collar around their neck although this depends on the dog's temperament and energy level.

Dog breeds such as Beagles often requires more training because they can be easily distracted and stubborn. Dogs that are older will take longer time to train especially if they never have leash training before.

While the dog is eating her meal, place the collar and leash on her. Let the leash hang loose by her side so that the dog will associate it as something pleasant and become used to it.

After that, take your dog for a walk outside. Let your dog drag the leash around while taking control of the leash occasionally and catching up with her. You may offer her a treat while showing the leash to her.

As you walk, tell your dog, "Let's go!". When your dog obeys your command, praise her and give her a pat on the head.

If your dog refused to listen to you and starts to pull towards another direction, do a clockwise turn and walk in a different direction. Keep repeating the exercise until your dog learns to obey your command and walk beside you.

If you are having difficulty controlling your dog, you should use a head halter lead before using a more corrective tool like choke collar. Consult a certified dog trainer for the proper tool to use on your dog. You can buy collars and leases at your local pet supplies store or at online stores such as Amazon.com.

The dog's collar should not be too tight or loose. If the collar is too loose, it will slip out of it. If the collar is too tight, your dog will feel uncomfortable and assume you are punishing her.

Before walking your dog, have your dog's foot pads examined. Make sure all her nails are short so that it will be easier for her to walk.

When your dog becomes used to walking, you can give your dog treats less often. Taking your dog out to defecate is not called leash training. You should take out your time in your schedule to exercise your dog in order to leash train your dog
