How To Look Good And Feel Good On The Ski Slopes

In California they have a ski resort called Bear Mountain and in high school one

of my friends made a parody called "Ski Bare." On an unusually sunny and warm winter's day (which does happen sometimes in California), he filmed his girlfriend coming down the slopes with nothing on by a pairs of skis. In the film as she gets close enough to the camera, so you could barely see that she wasn't wearing anything at all, then the film goes completely white.

The film processing lab blanked out the rest of the film due to their anti-nudity policy. All the same he won the student film competition. Unless you are going to a clothing optional ski resort (do those even exist?) we would suggest that you wear ski clothes that are comfortable, functional, and fashionable. You don't want to be miserable on the ski slopes for the sake of fashion, but you don't have to dress like the Pillsbury Doughboy, or the Michelin Man either.

There are modern day fabrics that are not bulky, yet provide good protection from the cold. The key to dressing for the cold is to think in terms of layers. There is a small space between each layer of clothing that has just the tiniest amount of air. That air serves as a barricade for heat to not escape, so rather than wear one very heavy layer of clothes, it is better to wear those made from thinner materials and wear many layers of them. The modern materials offer protection from both the cold and from wet. The rule is once you get wet, you are done, and you might as well head back to the lodge or you will spend the rest of the day being miserable.

The newest ski clothes materials that are used for undergarments are more like what you might use for scuba or skin diving. With that underneath as a foundation for protection, you really can't go wrong. On top of that you add your first layer of protection, like thermal underwear and then your shirt and pants, throw on a sweater as well if you think it will be extra cold and top it all off with your waterproof ski pants and parka. Make sure you wear two layers of socks as well, a thinner one that is covered by very thick one and don't forget to bring your gloves, ski mask and sunglasses or ski goggles. If you choose to use sunglasses, make sure you have a way to securely wear them so they won't fall off.

It is better if all your ski clothes go together and are not a mix and match ensemble. Choose the same color for your ski parka as your ski pants and pick a nice pair of sunglasses or ski goggles. The ones that have that golden shiny reflection when someone looks at you. Those are very hip.

It does not matter if you are skiing or snowboarding, the clothes work just as could for either one, however we have seen raging snowboarders wear hilarious accessories like floppy-knitted hats that look like ones worn by the character in the Dr. Seuss books, called "Cat in the Hat." So if you are a boarder rather than a skier feel free to really express yourself.
