How To Maintain Your Iron Fence
Iron fencing is a very popular variety because it has many advantages and only a few minor drawbacks
. It is a fairly versatile type of fence, and can be used in a number of applications. Its most common use is around residential areas, although it can often be seen in public parks, around important buildings like museums and government buildings, and as a security measure.
Here, we'll go over how to maintain and care for an iron fence, and while it doesn't usually require a lot of effort, there are a few tips that can make it easier and less costly.
The primary reason iron fencing is so popular for privacy and security fencing is because it is so strong and durable. It is very difficult to either bypass or damage an iron fence, and most iron fences will deter all but the most determined and capable intruders.
This durability comes at a relatively high cost when compared to other fencing materials, however, and iron fences are more difficult (and therefore more expensive) to install. While iron fences are very resistant to deliberate damage, they can be damaged in some extreme cases (such as by an automobile or other source of sufficient force).
In the event that an iron fence is damaged in this way, it is difficult to repair, and may need to be replaced entirely. Most iron fences are constructed with upright bars connected with a cross beam, and then welded in place. If the upright bars are damaged, they may be able to be detached and then replaced. If the cross beam is damaged, the entire section of fencing may require replacement, although damaging either of these is, again, almost impossible for a normal person.
The main way iron fences are damaged is over time. While they are very resistant to weathering effects like sun, rain, and wind, they are subject to corrosion, especially if they are in an area exposed to sea air. This process can be slowed down significantly with a coat of paint or the application of an anti-rusting agent. Protecting iron fences from rust is important if they are to maintain their high level of strength and resist blunt force damage.
Rust can also cause injury or disease if it is not kept in check. By properly maintaining an iron fence, you will have an almost impassible barrier that looks attractive and lasts a long time.
