If you are considering opening a checking account for the first time, or if it has been a long time since you have had a checking account, you may want to learn how to make deposits to your account.
When making a deposit in a checking account, it is neccessary to fill out a deposit slip, which can be found in the back of your checkbook or on the counter at your bank. Fill in the name of the depositor and the date at the top in the space provided. Write the total amount of paper money and coins opposite the word "Cash". List the amounts of any checks separately in the spaces provided. It is not necessary to indicate the names of the banks on which the checks are drawn. Write in the total of all the items at the bottom. Finally, give the deposit slip and the items being deposited to the bank teller.
As stated above, you can make a deposit by filling out a blank deposit slip obtained from the bank. You do not need to have your checkbook with you in order to make a deposit. The cashier will stamp the generic deposit slip you filled out at the bank as evidence that you made the deposit.
Make sure to note the deposit in your check register. The bank will maintain a record of your transactions, but it is wise to keep your own records and balance your checkbook, as banks will occasionally make a bookkeeping error. You may also want to keep copies of your deposit slips. This will give you a record of the source of your additional income.
