First, it's a good idea to get some personal time for both people in a relationship. Men often come home from work tired and stressed which is why it is a good idea to give them some time to breath before tossing the honey-do list at them. Women also have a long, difficult day with their jobs, whatever it may be. Some women work while others stay home with the kids. Some women try to do both. Whatever the case may be, it's a trying time and necessitates a break now and again. Kids also need some love and attention from both parents which is why it is a good idea to have both spouses spell each other with the kids to give the other some alone time.

A priority list is a very important list to have. Couples whose lists differ are couples who often struggle. Writing a personal priority list and then working on one together will help couples to realize their issues of contention and find a way to begin working on them. Couples cannot solve problems if they are uncertain as to what they are. Setting a priority list will help them to identify what is important to each other as well as to themselves.

Realizing that it takes two to make a relationship work can help to save some time and heartache. If only one spouse is putting in the effort, the relationship will suffer. Part of finding a successful relationship is to know when to cut bait. If the other person is not willing to communicate, make changes, work harder and do their share to make it work, it's doomed before it begins. Make certain that both people are putting in effort or it's simply a lost cause.

Communication is one of the most important things a couple can work on. By being able to communicate their needs, each side of the couple will feel much, much better in general. It will also help to set expectations and clear up and prevent misunderstandings. Couples who communicate are couples who are successful.
