How To Make A Tie: The Four-in-hand And The Pratt
It is a good idea to be equipped with the necessary skills when it comes to tying a necktie
. Here are some of the popular types of necktie knots:
Four-in-Hand Knot
There are several types of knots. The principal types of knots, however, are the Windsor, the Half-Windsor, the Pratt, and the Four-in-Hand. Of these four, the Four-in-Hand is the most popular as well as the easiest to learn. It is normally long but is a bit lopsided.
Below is the process of making this type of necktie knot:
1. Place the wide end of the tie on your right and the narrow end on your left. Extend the wide end by about a foot below the narrow end.
2. Pass the wide end over the slender end, that is, from the right side to the left side.
3. Next, pass the wide end underneath the narrow end, that is, from the left side to the right side.
4. Yet again, pass the wide end of the tie over the narrow end, that is, from right to left.
5. Proceed to pass the wide end from the back of the loop, that is, from the left side to the center.
6. While holding the front of the knot loose with your index finger, bring the wide end down through the loop in front.
7. Now remove the finger and tighten the knot.
8. Lastly, slide the knot up while holding the narrow end of the tie.
The Pratt Knot
This knot is also referred to as the Shelby Knot. It is a semi-wide knot. When making this knot, the necktie is normally turned outward.
The process of making the Pratt knot is as follows:
1. Begin by placing the tie in such a way that the inside of the tie faces outward. The wide end of the necktie should be at least a foot below the narrow end.
2. Pass the large end of the necktie under the narrow end, that is, from the right side to the left side.
3. Following that, pass the wide end over the narrow end then through the loop, that is, from the left to the left side.
4. Then, pass the wide end through the back of the loop, that is, from the left side to the center.
5. While holding the front of the knot loose with your index finger, bring the broad end down through the loop in front.
6. Now take out your index finger and proceed to tighten the knot.
7. While holding the slender end of the necktie, slide the knot up the collar.
Fitting it in
Before starting tying the tie, make sure that the collar of your shirt is up. When you are finished tying the tie, put the collar down. Ensure the knot is in the middle of your collar with the wide end of the tie ending around the middle of your belt buckle.
If this does not happen, untie the knot and retry. Getting that great knot on your tie requires practice until the art is fully mastered.
