The first steps in creating a website is to plan what you wanted to incorporate into it, develop a domain name, select a hosting site and establish your target audience. Once you are through with the planning stage, you can now create your own website. You can either get a website building program if you do not have a keen eye for design ability and you intend to use the site for personal purposes; learn a programming language (HTML, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript) and start everything from scratch; or use a free static site generator. Most of these options can be bought online or can be downloaded for free.
In order for your website to rank well in search engines, use strong keywords in your site so that whenever your audience type such keywords, your site will immediately come on the top of the search engine page; however, try minimizing the use of these keywords on a certain level as over doing it can affect the quality of the contents of your website. As a follow up, you can now upload your website on your chosen web host. When you are done uploading your site, do a usability testing with your family or friends as sample site users; this way you would be able to know what areas on your site needs to be improved. You can also submit your site on search engines to further advertise your services, or you can participate on blogs and forums and place your URL in your signature to create more traffic.

Always consider that the site you are creating is intended for a specific target audience that have needs, circumstances and frustrations. This way, you would be able to come up with a site that is a win-win situation for you and your website visitors.
