How To Make Cheap Calls To India
Those of us who have moved from India to another country face some difficult realities
. One of the most challenging of those realities is the high costs of keeping in touch with our family and friends. There's an obvious need here, and a number of companies aim to meet it by promising cheap calls to India. Nevertheless, it's difficult to tell which services live up to the advertising.
1. VoIP without contracts or monthly fees.
The best available options are the VoIP providers that do not require equipment, contracts, or even monthly fees. How it works is that you connect the call through their service, and since they're using a low-cost VoIP system, they can provide you with incredibly low rates (~1.5p/minute). This allows you take advantage of VoIP while avoiding any of the drawbacks.
2. Call back Services.
Call back services are similar in that you use a service other than the phone company to connect your call. Typically you'll ring a number once, and then they'll call you back, at which you point you use their service to connect your call. They save you money by routing your call through the country and provider currently offering the best rates. This is a good option, but since it's still landline rates, it's not as cheap as VoIP.
3. Other VoIP services.
VoIP services that require equipment, contracts, and monthly fees can be good options once you've cleared the hurdles. The big requirement is that you have a high-speed Internet connection available, which is why VoIP without a contract makes so much more sense for many people. However, if you do have high-speed access, VoIP can mimic a traditional home-based landline while providing cheap calls to India.
4. Instant messaging with voice capabilities.
For those with Internet access, even dial-up, instant messaging (IM) is a completely free way to communicate with family by text, voice, or video. The downside compared to VoIP is that it is much less reliable and the quality is not nearly as good. Another issue is that connecting a "call" is more involved. Nevertheless, it works well in a pinch.
5. Prepaid phone cards
Pre-paid phone cards are another option for those who have to use a landline. The good news is that prepaid phone cards can be quite cost-effective. The caveat is that you have to buy in bulk in order to take advantage of the best rates, and that requires a sizable investment.
