We all get nervous about this at some stage in our life, so it's perfectly natural. But that doesn't stop it being annoying that you're sitting or standing there doing an excellent impression of a deer caught by a car's headlights.

Ignore those corny chat up lines. Most of the time you'll end up being embarrassed and the girl of your dreams will make an excuse to leave your company sooner rather than later.

It's much better to talk about common ground. So unless the girl you're trying to make conversation with is sat next to you at a football game, chances are that it's better to talk about a different subject. The same goes for solitary occupations like playing Call of Duty.

Of course, you don't want to appear to be boring so unless you're caught in a downpour (in which case you could be the gentleman and offer up your coat) then the weather is out of the question as well.

Don't treat your conversation like a speed date either. Keep things steady and natural - speed dating isn't either of those.

Don't brag either. You'll be caught out later on in the relationship or you'll be totally unbelievable. Either way you'll ruin your chances of actually getting to know the girl of your dreams.

Relax. Yes, I know that's not easy, especially on a first date. But it's important. Take deep breaths. And try to engage your brain before speaking - but don't let that turn you into someone who sounds like a robot.

Look into her eyes. Not lower down her body! Eye contact is a good way to keep conversations going and also makes up for the odd gap in the conversation. If nothing else it's a much better excuse - "Sorry, I was so distracted by your beautiful eyes that I forgot to say anything" sounds much better than "Err, actually, I was staring at your breasts".

Above all else when you make conversation with a girl, it's important to be yourself. That way you don't turn into panic mode the next time you meet, trying to remember all the lies you told.
