How To Make Homemade Carp Fishing Baits For Beginners Part 2
Remember that the starting point of this simple beginner bait is the fact that carp
are very sensitive to true feeding triggers and in this case I have chosen glutamate. I actually chose glutamate to simplify things from your perspective so that your focus is on what carp are sensitive to! Now your focus is on fish first as the first bait design starting point you can next begin to create unique homemade carp fishing baits that will out fish popular readymade baits; read on now!
We can begin by choosing any of a wide range of feeding trigger rich substances, but the particular choice here is glutamate as found in Parmesan cheese powder and blue cheese powder. Remember that cheese is fatty and so not very soluble yet it really is optimised when made as water soluble as possible so fish can most easily detect it and so find your baits; there are many methods and treatments, additives etc to make your less soluble materials more soluble and much more digestible too!
Cheese has a high fat content and this means that it does not mix with water very well. So let us focus on this particular aspect of bait: solubility. Why not make your beginner cheese carp bait become solution far more easily so fish can detect it with far greater impacts?
One way is to not mix your bait with eggs. Use a feeding trigger rich water soluble powder instead! Even whole egg powder will bind your baits far too much to allow your glutamate feeding trigger to become solution in optimum concentrations.
The aim here is to maximise the concentration of your feeding trigger rich solution but using eggs will not do this and in fact once heated such egg baits will be vastly under optimised for functional performance even if they are fast steamed instead of being boiled!
You can help the oils and fats to emulsify and become more easily detected by carp by adding liquid high potency lecithin to your baits. I do this with any bait having an oil or fat content and emulsifiers act on many other substances which otherwise would be least likely to have a beneficial interaction with water that fish will most easily detect.
But following on from cheese think about your focus on glutamate and how you can make your baits as packed with natural glutamate as possible. I am totally avoiding using the artificial glutamate forms called monosodium glutamate (or MSG.) This is a salt form which is proven to be toxic at the receptor sites in the brain where cellular level bleeding is the result of contact with MSG.
This is the hidden truth of this salt so I never use it, but the list of harmful side effects of this substance are so in depth and profound you would be wise to avoid at all costs because it kills more brain cells than alcohol. In fact alcohol does not actually kill brain cells; more recent research has shown that alcohol slows down the rate of brain cell regeneration so it appears as if brain cells are killed. However the over all effect of being a regular boozer and never being able to naturally regenerate your brain cells will make it look like alcohol is killing your brain cells; the truth is in the details!
So to make a cheese bait far more potent and soluble packed with true feeding triggers and most especially with glutamate think back to the examples I provided of substances rich in glutamate; calcium caseinate, autolysed yeasts such as Marmite, mature cheeses, sea weeds, algae, tomatoes, yeasts and other fungi, fermented soy and many other substances including enzyme treated and predigested extracts and fermentation.
One powder I really rate in any bait be it boilies, pastes, particle mixes, ground baits etc is predigested yeast powder. It is really like the runny yeast extract Marmite type products, but is in powder form. Marmite is made using loads of added salt, and like honey it has a tendency to suck in water. This property is one I exploit in my baits to a heightened degree so I am very particular about exactly what I use.
For me allowing my feeding triggers to become intensely concentrated solution by allowing baits to actively break down is vital, but this does not mean my baits are soft. It is possible to make extremely hard homemade baits which are exceptionally water soluble!
I used cheese powders as a simple familiar substance to introduce the starting point about starting with what fish are sensitive to first, and then thinking what substances are rich in that particular feed triggering substance. This kind of approach makes things simple and although many different ways to approach bait design can be exploited this introduces a really powerful thought process that will guarantee that everyone utilizing it will catch by using.
To make more cheese bait intrinsically soluble and far more packed with glutamate true feeding trigger you can being your experimentations knowing that you are working with a starting soluble substance that naturally makes fish feed. Arguably the richest complete natural foods that carp have access to all the time which fulfills all their most vital nutritional requirements are the algae.
Considering that carp and many other fish have evolved over eons of time to exploit algae it is no surprise that carp are highly sensitive to substances it is composed of and one of the substances is glutamate. I use glutamate in much of my diet and I avoid cooking much of the time to retain live enzymes and vital energy in my food so I expend least internal digestive and metabolic energy etc in digesting and assimilating food.
If you are serious about bait it is only moments before you realise that you are what you eat and suddenly you begin to see how you can tailor what you eat with your body type and unique nutritional and health needs and personal tastes and sensitivities. Just like fish each and every human is a unique genetic individual. Yeast extract and sugars are 2 of the most used taste enhancers that the food industry uses to programme our palate or in other words our taste buds and other forms of receptors. These are adapting all the time and in fact just a few generations ago entire lineages of humans had no extra genetic sensitivity to sugar (the so called sweet tooth,) and this is something passed down in the genes from the first generations of each lineage exposed to refined sugar!
We can catch more fish by programming fish receptors, and making fish even more sensitive to certain bait substances we choose to select for this and many other possible reasons. The feed stimulation, taste enhancement and receptor programming basis of exploiting glutamate makes a very good bait making starting point! I could suggest that you consider listing all the glutamate rich substances you can find. Of these some may be in a liquid form and others in powder and other forms. But however you begin in actually sourcing and experimenting with bait substances know that your bait substances in this case actually trigger feeding as they are indeed rich in a true feeding trigger!
Just for example you might begin with Parmesan cheese, blue cheese powder, concentrated yeast powder, Marmite yeast extract, calcium caseinate, spirulina (blue green algae,) and seaweed powder plus some LO30 and liquid crustacean extract. I recommend that if you are totally new to bait making to use fewer ingredients and keep things simple by writing all you do down so that you can actually repeat your bait recipes in the future.
There is nothing worse than making a new version of homemade bait that catches extraordinarily successfully, while forgetting to writing down exact details of the recipe so you can replicate the bait in the future!
Do not instantly go rushing off to make a large order of ingredients etc that will commit you to just 1 recipe and just the one batch of bait. Making bait is not a chuck it and chance it thing but is a series of methodical steps all of which will work and catch fish getting progressively better the more you refine every aspect of your bait more and more!
Therefore when first starting out only make small batches of test bait mixes! This way you can test the functional qualities of baits in terms of binding and solubility and also the actual external and internal potency of your baits when they break down into solution.
The number of people who contact me wanting to know what I think of their new bait mix is horrifying to me because so many simply have no idea about testing small volumes of ingredients in a refined way and testing totally new baits on easy waters and not on hard specimen lakes first! If you want true confidence in your baits think about this please!
The fact is that the more fish you hook on your new test batches of small volumes of baits, be it boilies or pastes etc while comparing test batches, the more you can with confidence keep on refining baits to constantly improve them to always create the very best you can! When you do go onto harder waters you know for sure that your refined homemade baits are true winners and proven by real catch results!
Unfortunately the vast majority of beginners seem to think that ordering a list of ingredients, then chucking them all together as it pleases them and then expect utterly unrefined and totally unproven recipe to be the new wonder bait on their water!
If your new small test batches of bait are seriously ripping apart the easy waters you can be pretty well confident that with more refinements along the way the best of your new baits will also be harder water winners. Certainly on easy waters your new batches of test baits should be the equal but preferably be more successful than all the of the readymade baits used on those waters. To achieve this is not rocket science; it does take easy step by step refinements of your baits. I can help you to reach this stage, and the way I see it, if I could do it on my own without an expert mentor then beating readymade baits using homemade baits is possible for absolutely anyone!
You are normally afforded the luxury of 3 rods so use them to test bait mixes knowing each will catch, but one batch will over time catch more fish and so you can choose that version to refine further and further still. Remember that even with a savoury type bait such as one of cheese, yeast, algae etc you can include alternative flavours or simply an agent to increase the rate baits become solution, for example including Vodka, preferably at home not while drinking on the bank. Think safety first; I say this from personal experience that drinking and a possibility of swimming in the dark perhaps certainly do not mix!
Calcium caseinate is a great starting binder and massively better than semolina. I often use various milk extracts and fractionates etc to form a highly water soluble feeding trigger rich basis to begin from when designing certain approaches of homemade baits and these will certainly bind baits without using any egg of any kind. I avoid eggs as egg is the number 1 warning signal to carp of potential danger of most of the readymade boilies ever made in history.
Apart from this little fact, eggs reduce the function of your baits to actively become solution and prevent them from truly working from the centre outwards so all the bait works immediately; to achieve this you need soluble binders instead and semolina is not ideal unless you are looking to reduce your bait potency dramatically!
The last thing I want to do is stifle you own unique ability to create completely new unique paradigms of baits. Whatever you do avoid thinking that making baits to be similar to readymade baits is a good thing. In fact the opposite is true; make your baits as different as possible to readymade baits! By this I mean every conceivable way. I could list so many characteristics, features, modes of action and physical and chemical aspects of baits that can be avoided and made different to create homemade baits utterly unrecognizable as baits in any conventional shop bought readymade boilie sense of the word!
But I wish to avoid putting recipes into your heads because that will simply prejudice your own unique creative thinking process. I have mentioned some substances which will definitely get you started on your road to creating baits that really turn fish and out fish readymade baits. But you should have no fear at all in making baits with these substances in any level; keep an open creative mind and keep focused on the fish and your catches feedback writing it down along with your new recipes so you learn fastest as possible.
The majority of the most effective bait substances are either easily water soluble (reactive,) or maybe even if not particularly water soluble then they have highly potent functional properties internally when consumed by fish. This is where things get very interesting and where the whole world of bait opens out offering endless possibilities for creating new and unique baits with unique potency, unique modes of action, unique water reactivity, unique nutritional benefits, unique action on receptors, unique palatability qualities and so on.
Refining a new potent homemade savoury cheese, tomato, yeast, CC Moore Cyprivit and fine sea weed and kelp complex umami flavour glutamate bait for example is sure to be different to all those fruit flavoured baits the herds are using right now. So go for it now and beat those expensive readymade baits on your water!
