How To Make Homemade Soap
Soap making has been done for centuries, but with the advancement of technology
, the majority of soap is bought today. However, because of people's awareness of chemicals and additives in products today, many are going back in time and making their own soap. This is something that is easily done and needs no special training to do. One can make anything from simple basic soap to a luxurious good smelling one. There are two popular methods on how to make homemade soap today, the pour and melt method and the cold process.
The easiest and safest ways to make soap today is with the melt and pour method. The base of this is a pre-made soap block that is unscented and uncolored which can be found in craft stores or suppliers. Using this base soap, it is first melted down either in a microwave or a double-boiler. When it is completely melted, one just needs to add their own colors and fragrances to the mix and pour it into molds. Once the soap has cooled and hardened, it is ready for use.
The other method may seem more complicated, but it is truly the method for making soap from scratch. In the cold process, you control everything that is added to the soap and all the ingredients. However, this method requires lye and this is a dangerous material if not handled correctly. Before starting this method, one needs to learn how to use lye properly.
You will need animal fats or vegetable oils, lye, and water. You will also need a soap pot to make it in, a mold to pour the soap into and plenty of space for mixing. Added options are fragrance or essential oils and colorants to be added to personalize the soap to how you want it.
In this process the lye and water should be prepared first and set aside, because the lye heats up the water it needs to cool down after mixing. You'll need to heat your oils till they are around a hundred degrees and then slowly add the lye and water mix in. Blend this till the soap beings to trace, which means till it thickens like pudding. That could take up to an hour to happen. But when the trace has set in, you then add the fragrance and colors of your choice and pour the soap into molds. After a few hours it will harden. But it will not be ready to use for about four to six weeks as it will need time to cure.
There are many different ways on how to make homemade soap, and these are just two of the most popular. This can be a rewarding and fun experience and with practice will allow you to be as creative as you like with colors, designs, and fragrances. Depending upon how much time and effort you want to put into it, these make great personalized gifts for friends and family too.
