An example of what I mean by expanding on pre-existing software and make it do something different and unique is this: first, there was Facebook. Then Twitter came along and took a single part of Facebook and expanded that part and made it separate for a different kind of social network.
That simple, small idea is now a household name!

One of the best ways to find ideas for software creation is to go directly to your customer. Visit forums and message boards, speak with your prospects and ask them what kind of problems they are dealing with on a day to day basis.
Next, create software that will take care of these problems and Walla-you have a winner!
Following news and trends is also a smart move. See what's hot-people are like sheep-they tend to follow the herd. (e.g.: Twitter).
