How To Make Sure That The Birds Are Well Cared For Throughout Winter

40% of the worlds birds migrate for winter, moving to a warmer climate in order to escape the harsh winters

. However, when it comes to British birds, there are many of them who spend the cooler months in their British homelands, braving the harsh winters to stay close to home. These birds are the ones who will find it hardest to survive. This means that caring for them is essential, and anyone can do it.

The RSPB reports that there are many birds in Britain when the months cool down. Some birds migrate over here from places in the rest of Europe, and take Britain as their home, finding the winters here better than their homelands. Dunnocks, Collared Doves, Nuthatches, Goldfinches and Wrens are just some of the winter birds that reside in Britain whilst the weather cools off. Preserving their strength and numbers is essential.

Robins are, according to the RSPB, residential of the United Kingdom all year round. Caring for them, then, is something that needs to be done during winter, to preserve their numbers. Many British birds are in danger of disappearing, becoming extinct, and so preserving them is of great importance. Robins, though small, are incredibly territorial. However, it is easy to give them a place to feed.

To create a place for Robins to feed, there needs to be sufficient room for the bird to leave, should it feel threatened. Open, unguarded spaces are best to situate ground feeders to. Having a place clear of hiding spots, means that predators cannot lie in wait.

A ground feeding platform is ideal for robins, and other birds. Blackbirds and thrushes also favour this method of feeding, as reported by Saga. Though it is best to avoid low platforms if there are cats nearby, as they will seek to attack. A feeding platform should always be put somewhere that is free from places where cats my hide.

If there are many ground predators, such as cats and foxes, then a traditional bird feeder may be used. These large platforms are often preferred by most winter residential birds, being high up. Another thing that needs to be done when setting up a bird feeder, is making sure it is somewhere safe, in an open space, that the visiting bird may find unthreatening.

Blue tits, and great tits alike prefer hanging feeders. These can be placed in trees, preferably toward the back of the garden as to not scare off the birds. However, all birds will most likely use these feeders, if they are the only ones they are provided with. Different breeds prefer different foods, and providing a wide range of these can prolong bird life throughout the cooler British seasons.

Peanuts are excellent for blue tits, great tis, nuthatches, and siskins; they are all known to prefer the hanging feeders, also. Robins and wrens are partial to mealworms, whereas mixed seeds will suit chaffinches and house sparrows. Old fruit can be put on the lawn, or on a ground feeder, for blackbirds to feast upon.

It is just as important to give birds a place to drink, as it is to eat. For birds who prefer nuts and seeds with little moisture- like the peanuts preferred by blue tits- a drinking point is essential in keeping them hydrated. During cold spikes, it can be possible for these drinking points to become frozen over, making them essentially unusable.

There are many ways, however, to keep these bird baths free of ice. Keeping close to them and chipping the ice away is one. There is also a special liquid that can be added to the water; this is safe for any bird to drink and put on themselves. This liquid simply stops the water from freezing over.

Durham University led scientists in to a study, that then demonstrated how birds breeding ranges are moving further north. However, these migrating birds are not moving their wintering areas to suit the travel. This means that migrating birds face a lot more trials and tribulations. And so, it makes the preservation of the British residential birds, and the birds who migrate to Britain during winter, even more essential.
