How To Make The Most Out Of Long Flight Delays

How To Make The Most Out Of Long Flight Delays

Having travelled quite a lot the past two years I have been delayed lots and lots of times. After the initial shock of the first ten times you kind of get used to the fact that it's going to happen sooner or later. When you reach that moment you come to realise how badly everyone else handles it. People rush to the airline desks like there's a sale on and you can see the attendant cowering behind the desk like a gazelle under the watch of a pride of lions.

This is the worst thing you can do. Now that you know that I'll let you in on some insider tips that will let make the most out of your stay at the airport.

1. Relax

For most flights you are prepared to sit down and do nothing for a good two hours. There's also a good chance that you brought a book or some entertainment. When everybody goes charging at the desk attendant, don't! Just sit down, read your book and relax for a while, if you have a laptop take a walk and see if there are any free wifi available. Grab a coffee or something to eat whilst the rest of the herd is distracted barrating the desk attendant.

2. Be Polite

Manners don't cost a thing, but they can get you everything.

After the mob at the flight desk has gone, and the desk attendant has calmed themsleves down, approach them slowly with a smile. Be polite and use gentle tones, kindly ask them what your options are. They will probably be rather short with you after dealing with hundreds of angry passenger so try to strike up a rappor, ask them how they cope with that crowd. After they have answered, ask again what your options are, they might look a little harder after they realise that you are not an angry member of the mob. After they have checked ask them if you can get a pass to the first class lounge to wait it out, 99% of the time it might not work but I have been upgraded by simply asking. If not ask them about overnight options, and what has to happen so that the airline put you in a hotel. Not only will you be more in the know than the rest of the crowd but you might get preferential treatment.

3. Try to Occupy Your Time

Try to find a quiet corner where you can get some work done or read a book, this generally passes the time quite quickly. If you are too fidgety and don't want to read, have a walk round the stores, or hit the departure lounge bar, just be sure not to get too rowdy!

Follow these tips and your stay in airport lounges will be fine. It's always worth checking you computer to see if you can get an earlier flight and your money refunded. When I was stuck for 12 hours I found some cheap flights to Paris and then jumped on a plane from there.

The last tip I can give is to try and stay moving, if you find an earlier flight then take it. Time always seems to move faster when you are travelling.
