How To Make Your Dog Stop Barking
Dog barking is your dog's way of communicating with you and other dogs
. Barking can be a warning for us about an unknown person coming to the house. Warnings can be a good thing, but if the dog's barking carry's on too long then it can be a problem. We lose patience with our pet and often the noise just rises in the home. The dog barking and you shouting to the dog to stop.
If you have a young puppy it is easy to train them to cease barking. You can use this same technique for older dogs as well, but you do need to keep working on the problem to over ride old learnt behavior and habits. Whatever the age of your dog you have to be consistent and calm.
Start by choosing your command word, which you will always use to stop the barking. Here are a few words to choose from, but you can have any word as long as that is the word you keep to stop barking, try words that are easy to remember such as "enough" "stop" "quite". This will allow the dog to know you are in commanded and he/ she can stop barking now. Have a treat or favorite toy to hand and get someone to knock on the door. After a few barks from your dog use your chosen word, start to distract them with the treat.
When they stop barking for a few seconds, reward them with the treat and praise. It is important to allow a few seconds of no barking before the treat is given as you do not want your dog to think you are rewarding them for the bark. Your dog needs to know you are in commanded. If the dog doesn't stop barking, then wave the toy or treat under their noise until they see it and want what you have. Repeat the command; wait a few seconds while they are quite, reward and praise.
As your training improves food treats need to be less important and so give a food treats sometime rather than every time. All food treats need to be small but something the dog knows is a treat. Small pieces of chicken can be used or small slices of carrot. Try to think of things that will not affect your dog's health in the long run. Training needs to be given when the dog is not very excitable, as the dog may be just before walk time. Nor when they are very tired. A good time is after they have had their walk and nap.
Another point here is not to give your dog verbal or physical reinforcement while they are barking. This just encourages the behavior you do not want. You also have to think about the breed of the dog as some breeds are bred as sheep or stock watchers and so part of this is that they are alert and warn with barking. This does not stop the training, but it is something to keep in mind while you choose your pet. Be patient and consistent and you will have the behavior that you want.
