How To Make Your Own Diy Solar Panel

Solar power taps into one of the best renewable energy resources available

. However, solar panels are quite expensive. For this reason, many are trying to build a DIY Solar Panel or perhaps even multiple panels. It is not as hard or involved as you might think. You do need some basic tools, a little know-how, and you should be pretty handy with those tools. This article will explain how to make your own DIY Solar Panel.

A solar panel is a box that holds solar cells. Solar cells are what actual turn sunlight into electricity. They are quite fragile and break easily. A DIY Solar Panel is just a box that protects the solar cells and holds them all together in one place. Also, it takes a lot of cells to make a useful amount of energy, so the solar panel ensures you have enough.

The most difficult obstacle in making a DIY Solar Panel is getting the solar cells. They are expensive and often even hard to find. However, you can search eBay and find factory seconds or blemished cells at a much lower price. You can also search the websites, or call, major solar cell manufacturers and ask about factory seconds.

A good type of solar cell to purchase is a 3 x 6 mono-crystalline cells. You will need quite a few of these. 36 in a series will produce 18 volts; which is enough to charge a 12 volt battery. These cells are very thin and as brittle as glass. They often come dipped in glass, which is hard to remove. If you can, purchase some that is not dipped in glass. These are a great for making your Diy Solar Panels.

There are other sizes besides 3 x6. Just remember a few simple facts

"Cells of the same type all produce the same voltage no matter what size they are. So the same number of cells is always needed.

"Larger cells produce more current (Amps) and smaller cells produce less current.

"The total power your panel can produce is determined by Amps X Volts.

As mentioned before, a solar panel is really just a shallow box, so start by creating a box from wood that is the right size to hold your solar cells. You will need a measuring tape, saw, nails and screws for this part. You should also add some inch vent holes and fill them with fiberglass to keep insects out. Use peg board or some other non-conducting material to fit into the box. This will act as the support structure for the individual cells. Next, place some glass or plexiglass over the cells. This allows sunlight in but protects from sunlight.
