The most difficult obstacle in making a DIY Solar Panel is getting the solar cells. They are expensive and often even hard to find. However, you can search eBay and find factory seconds or blemished cells at a much lower price. You can also search the websites, or call, major solar cell manufacturers and ask about factory seconds.

A good type of solar cell to purchase is a 3 x 6 mono-crystalline cells. You will need quite a few of these. 36 in a series will produce 18 volts; which is enough to charge a 12 volt battery.
