How To Make Your Own Electronic Radio Kit

Instructions

Instructions

1

Poke two holes side-by-side in a coffee can, 1/2 inch below the open end. Thread the magnet wire through one of them from the inside and pull out 1 foot of wire. Tape the wire on the inside and thread the other end through the other hole.

2

Wrap the wire around the can 30 times, with each coil touching the one above it. Leave one coil loose enough to create some slack, then twist the loose wire into a loop. The loop should poke out from the site of the can. Poke two holes in the bottom of the can, then thread the wire into the first one and out the second. Tape it in place on the inside of the can.

3

Thread the loose wire at the top of the can into a Fahnestock clip or machine screw attached to the plywood board. If you're using a machine screw, screw it in through the bottom of your board and wind the wire around it, then tighten the wire in place using a knurled nut.

4

Thread the loose wire from the bottom of the can through two clips or screws, and cut off any remaining slack. Leave 3 inches for making connections. Wind those remaining 3 inches around one lead of your 47 kohm resistor. Thread the other resistor lead through a clip or screw, and attach it to the germanium diode. Ensure the diode is oriented so that electricity flows towards the resistor.

5

Attach the alligator clip to the small loop you left on the coil of the coffee can. If the alligator clip has no wire attached, attach a length of magnet wire to it. Attach the other end of this wire to the remaining end of the germanium diode.

6

Attach the leads of the crystal earphone to the screw or clips on either side of the 47 kohm resistor. If the signal is faint or scratchy, twist the loose magnet wire from the top of the can around another length of wire. Attach this new length to a chair or tree branch: it will act as an antenna.

Tips & Warnings

Connect the wires by twisting the ends together. For a more secure connection, use a soldering iron and solder the connections together.

Check your germanium diode's package to ensure you know which way electricity flows through it. Germanium diodes only work in one direction.
