How To Make the First Day Of Kindergarten A Success

It is a day we look forward to for years, the first day of kindergarten. Sometimes we anticipate it with dread and other times the day can't come fast enough. No matter how you feel about sending your child to kindergarten, the day will be here sooner or later. You need to do what you can now to prepare your child, and yourself, for the big day.

As someone who has worked in an elementary school for over 15 years, I can give you a few tips to make the first day less stressful for both you and your child.

Prepare Your Child

We tell our kids they are going to school. We talk about school, get supplies, and buy new clothes. But when you get there on the first day your child freezes and starts to cry. Why did this happen? Well, you talk about it and prepare for it, but does your child really know what school is? Many kids know where the building is, etc., but they don't really understand what goes on inside.

If you have the opportunity, take your child to the school before the school year begins and show them around. It is very beneficial if you do this during the previous school year when school is in session. That way they can see other kids in the building, students sitting in desks, and perhaps meet the teacher. If you are lucky enough to live in an area where they do a kindergarten preview in the spring, this is a perfect opportunity to expose your child to the school environment. If your local school has events such as carnivals or school plays, take your preschooler to them. This will give your child a chance to bond with their school and develop a sense of belonging.

Let Your Child Be Big'

It is okay to walk your student to and from class for the first few days, most parents do. However, as the school year progresses let your child grow up a little and go to class on their own. This will help reduce the separation anxiety you both may feel. Plus it will help your child feel responsible and allow them to be independent. The sooner you do this the better. I have seen children as old as 5th grade afraid to walk out the front doors of the school because Mom isn't in the office to pick them up. If you are concerned about your child's safety, rest assured that most schools are very cautious about supervision before and after school as well as at break time.

Communicate

Communication is vital for a good school experience. Both for your child and for you. However, don't be a parent who constantly calls the school and the teacher. Allow your child to give you messages and notes. This will add to their responsibility and will teach them they need to involve you in their education. If you need to call the teacher or school occasionally, but don't call to verify what your student has told you. This will make your child feel like you don't believe them. If you need to verify, make sure your child is out of earshot before you call.

Your child's educational experience can be very rewarding and a time for him to learn to be responsible. Allow these changes and growth to occur, you will be happy you did when he becomes a responsible adult!
