How To Manage That Overwhelmed Feeling

So its the holiday season already and the mad frenzy had begun

.

Seriously. Its an insane time where you almost cant help but get that overwhelmed feeling.

I made 3 phone calls yesterday to a popcorn place just trying to place one order. It was totally unexpected, but I spent so much time trying to place an order that my day got backed up.

But, I mean we do bring a lot of that overwhelmed feeling on ourselves though...by trying to cram so much stuff into about a third of the time.

With many people wanting to skip town for the holidays or make end of year deadlines, COMBINED with the holiday hoopla...its no surprise when days start looking like this:

shopping...parties...work...

More shopping...less work...more parties...

Shopping...some parties...planning for guests...cooking...and maybe some work.

Ah...Stress!

Thats when people start screaming Calgon, Take Me Away, and start sprinting for the nearest bubble bath.

But there really is no need to allow the holidays to push you into that overwhelmed feeling.

Really, when it comes to managing stress, the same principles apply during the holidays as they do at any other time during the year.

The key is to focus and be a little more alert so that overwhelmed feeling doesnt sneak up on you.

So here are a few things you can do to keep you on track when you start getting that overwhelmed feeling.

Plan your day and stick to it. Effective time management is one of the best ways to prevent getting that overwhelmed feeling.

They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure...and that has never been more true than during the holidays.

Write your schedule out the night before and be realistic about the amount of time it takes to accomplish an activity. And stick to it! My phone call to the popcorn shop was not scheduled, and it ended up taking a lot of time out of my day.

Prioritize...there is a big difference between what needs to get done and what you want to get done. The overwhelmed feeling starts to come on when we bite off more than we can chew. Especially during the holidays when we are trying to please so many people. So target the 3 things that are of top priority, and commit to getting those tasks done.

Take a Break-Sometimes you just need to take a step back. Go for a walk, clear your head. Go do something completely unrelated to work or family. Ask yourself is what your worried about really worth getting worked up over? Is it a big issue or a minor irritation that has been blown out of proportion Sometimes the problems that seem really big on the surface, are actually pretty trivial. So taking short breaks throughout your day can help you keep a clear head and help keep things in perspective.

The holiday season should be a time for family and fun. So follow these steps and manage that overwhelmed feeling.
