How To Measure For Replacement Vinyl Windows--twelve Essential Tips
Picture the scene
Picture the scene. Your shiny new replacement windows have arrived, and you or your contractor are poised to insert the first one into the opening. It's lifted, it's pushed forward... it doesn't fit properly!
That's probably because you got it wrong when you were measuring for replacement windows weeks or months earlier. Imagine the horrible feeling you'd have in the pit of your stomach.
Scared now? That's not a bad thing, because most of these errors occur when people take the process of measuring for replacement windows too casually. But relax a little, because it's not that difficult. Just follow these 12 tips:
If you've got questions (for example, you don't know what a "jamb" or a window ""head"" is) call your manufacturer before you start measuring. Better to look ignorant with a "stupid" question now than prove your ignorance--and face unnecessary expense--later.
Write down each measurement as soon as you've taken it.
Make sure that the device you use to measure is truly vertical or horizontal when you take your readings
Once you've finished measuring, have a friend or family member take all the measurements again, and then compare the results.
If there's a discrepancy, remeasure that window.
When ordering (actually, it's good practice throughout) write the width first, followed by the height (W x H), otherwise your sash windows could slide from side-to-side, and your casements could open up and down.
If you're replacing wooden windows, measure from jamb face to jamb face width-wise, and from the bottom lip of the head to the top of the sloped sill to find the height.
If you're replacing aluminum windows, measure from the most protruding flange to the most protruding flange.
Measure each window six times: three times vertically (extreme right, extreme left, and in the middle), and three times horizontally (top, bottom, and middle).
When ordering, quote the smallest of the three measurements in every case.
When placing your order, talk to your manufacturer about how you've been measuring for replacement windows. Make sure the company is happy with the process you've followed.
Some suppliers may deduct a quarter inch from each of the measurements you give to find the true manufacturing dimensions. Others will assume you have already done that yourself. Check which policy your manufacturer follows.
