How To Move Your Freestanding Fridge Freezer

If you find that you have to move your fridge freezer then theres no doubt that a little planning can make your life a lot easier

. Amongst all the household electrical appliances the fridge freezer is probably the most awkward to move from one location to another. All in all the whole process can take a few days to complete. However, by following these steps it should be a less stressful task.

Food usage - Plan ahead with meals in the weeks leading up to the move, this should allow you to minimise the amount of food left in your fridge and freezer when the time comes to move. Before transporting the fridge the freezer should be empty, there is no point carrying any extra weight, they are big enough and heavy enough as they are. Frozen food is known to spoil quickly and it could leave behind a bad smell, not something you want for your fridge. With the correct forward planning it is easy enough to make sure that no food gets wasted.

Defrosting - Before transporting the freezer it is important to defrost it, there are a number of reasons for this. Problems such as condensation and melting could take place during the move and potentially ruin more than just the fridge. If possible allow the fridge to defrost for 2 days to ensure that you avoid such problems.

Cleaning - When the freezer is defrosted remove all the trays and any other removable objects from within the fridge freezer. These could potentially damage your fridge when in transit if they are left inside. Clean the trays with detergent and store them separately when doing the move, take extra care if there are any breakable objects such as glass trays. Following this leave the fridge door open for 24 hours to allow it to dry out completely.

Moving the Fridge - If possible remove handles as these may catch or damage other items during the move. Secondly weighing the freezer down is often a good idea, this keeps it stable for the duration of the journey Wrapping blankets around the outside of the fridge is also effective in stopping any doors from opening and causing any surface damage. Ideally freezers should be transported vertically if possible.

Reinstalling the Fridge - When the fridge has reached its final destination return it to its standing position. If it has been on its side then it is important to wait a while before plugging it back in. When in transit the oil from the compressor may have moved into the cooling lines. It is important to let this oil drain back before switching the freezer on as it might not work otherwise.
