How To Operate A Boat Davit
The article below details step by step how to properly and safely operate a boat davit (crane)
. A davit can be used to lift a tender, dinghy, jet-ski, kayak, scooter, bicycle, etc. Never use a davit to lift people.
The steps below provide safe instruction for the operation of a hydraulic and manual davit. The how-to videos for these steps can be viewed on You Tube or on the UMT Marine website.
Step 1: Check the area around the davit and make sure it is clear.
Step 2: Remove the tie-downs from the pad-eye to release the davit boom.
Step 3: Check the condition of the hook.
Step 4: Connect the remote control to the davit.
Step 5: Turn the power on (breaker or switch).
Note: Remote Controls- your remote will depend on the type of davit you have.
Two Button- Operates Cable
Four Button- Operates Cable and Boom
Six Button- Full Hydraulic with Rotation
Step 6: The top buttons of the remote control the boom. To move the boom up- press the left button. To move the boom down- press the right button.
Step 7: The center buttons of the remote control the rotation. To move the boom left- press the left button. To move the boom to the right- press the right button.
Step 8: The bottom buttons operate the cable. To move the cable up- press the left button. To move the cable down- press the right button.
Step 9: When the davit is not in use, be sure to put the davit in the storage position.
Step 10: Turn the breaker off.
How to secure your hydraulic davit in the storage position
Step 1: Using the remote control bring up the davit cable
Step 2: Sweep the davit to pad-eye (Boom should be in up position)
Step 3: Move the boom down to the lowest position
Step 4: Turn the power off
Step 5: Use the tie-Down to secure the davit in the storage position by attaching it to the pad-eye
Step 6: Turn the turnbuckle so that the davit does not move during travel
Step 7: Remove the remote control
How to operate your manual davit
Warning: Davit is only for use with your dinghy (tender), Jet-ski, Scooter, Bicycle, etc.
Never use the davit to lift people
Step 1: Check the area around the davit and make sure it is clear.
Step 2: Open the inspection plate on the side of the boom and pull off the cable from the davit, making sure the cable is out.
Step 3: Turn the Power On (brake or switch)
Step 4: Move the cable down just a little so that you can take the hook out from the pad-eye
Note: The cable should never be loose
Step 5: Check the condition of the hook
Step 6: The remote control for 12 or 24 volt manual davits usually have two buttons for the cable- To move the cable up-press the left button. To move the cable down- press the right button.
Step 7: The remote control for 110 volt manual davits have a run button and an up / down button. Press the desired position and then press the run button.
Step 8: The extension has three positions. To use the extension:
Locate the pin on the end of the boom. Remove the pin and bring the cable down a little. Now you can manually sweep the extension to desired position and put the pin back in.
Step 9: To lift the boom
Take out the big pin
Lift the boom to desired position (2 options) and slide the pin back into position
Step 10: To rotate the davit
Manually move davit, left or right
Step 11: When your davit is not in use, secure the davit in the storage position
Step 12: Turn the breaker off
How to secure your UMT manual davit in the storage position
Step 1: Bring the cable up with about 1 inch left at the end
Step 2: Remove the big pin
Step 3: Put the boom in the down position and replace the pin in the storage position
Step 4: Remove the small pin on the extension boom
Step 5: Press the cable button on the remote control- the extension boom will go inside the boom
Step 6: Replace the small pin once the extension is fully inside the boom
Step 7: Sweep the davit to the pad-eye
Step 8: Attach the hook from the davit to the pad-eye
Step 9: Stretch a bit of the cable up so that the davit does not move during travel
Step 10: Turn the power off
Step 11: Remove the remote control or place it back inside the boom
