How To Paint A Helmet
Have you been thinking about painting the helmet that you wear when riding your motorcycle but aren't sure how to do so. Here is a handy little guide that will tell you how to paint a helmet.
One thing you notice about helmets is they are always painted, and you rarely see a helmet that hasn't been painted because they simply are never sold that way. If you want to paint your helmet because you are tired of the way it looks or it is full of scuffs and scratches, then you certainly can do so on your own with a little hard word and determination.
1. Prepare the helmet.
The first thing you need to do is get the helmet ready for painting, which means you'll have to remove everything that is on the helmet shell including screws, padding, straps, and anything else that you can remove. If you can't remove it, cover it up with tape.
2. Remove the clear coat.
Next, remove the clear coat from the helmet by scrubbing it with a heave piece of sandpaper. You'll know when the clear coat comes off because you will have a helmet with a completely flat look and feel when done. Once the clear coat is removed, sand the helmet some more with a finer piece of sandpaper in order to give it a more smooth surface.
3. Prepare your painting area.
After you are finished removing the clear coat and the helmet has been sanded to the point of being completely smooth, prepare the area where you are going to be painting by putting down newspaper or some other form of disposable covering. This will keep you from having a huge mess to clean up when you're finished.
4. Apply the first coat, or base layer.
Carefully apply a base layer of paint to your helmet, making sure that the paint goes on smooth without any streaks. The thicker the initial layer of paint is the better. This will give you a better surface to work with if you plan on painting on any designs. When you have finished applying this layer, allow it to dry for several minutes.
5. Apply your designs.
If you have any designs or artwork that you would like to incorporate into the helmet, this would be the time to do it. Apply your designs or artwork with pre-made stencils so that you are only painting the area where your design is and not the rest of the helmet. You might have to hold the stencils in place with tape.
6. Apply the clear coat.
When you've got the base layer and any designs painted, apply the clear coat layer to the helmet. Apply the varnish at least two times in order to create a thick and protective layer for your helmet.
7. Wrapping up.
After your helmet has completely dried, replace any padding, screws, straps, or other items that you removed before painting your helmet.
