How To Paint A Floor:
As with all painting projects, preperation is key in order to create a solid, long lasting finish. However, when painting a concrete floor, preperation takes even more of a vital role due to the continuous build up of elements on the surfce which will effect any coating applied.
Obviously, purchasing a good quality floor paint is important, but to get the benefits of the paint the floor needs to be completly clean from oil, grease, dust, chemicals, flaking paint and anything else that may be resting on the surface.
We at Decorating Warehouse have provided a rough guide to this process in 4 easy steps:
1. Preparing the surface
Firstly the surface will need to be swept to clear all the dust and other items resting on the surface. If the floor has been previously painted, ensure all flaking and loose paint is completly removed. If there is any oil or grease on the floor this also needs to be removed. This can be done by using a good cleaner & degreaser which, when applied correctly, creates a cleanbase for the floor paint.
This cleaning is vital as however good the floor paint is, it will only adhere to whatever it is painted onto. So if the paint goes onto flaking paint or oil/grease, it will not have a long life and will be easily scratched off. Only when you are confident that the floor is totally clean can you move onto applying the floor paint.
If the floor has been power floated or is generally very shiny, again the floor paint will not adhere to the surfce. The floor needs to have a key (rough surface) for the paint to stick. What needs to be applied in this instance prior to painting is Acid Etch Solution. This will etch the floor to create a key in which the paint can then adhere to.
2. Selecting the correct paint
Situation: General warehouse / garage / showroom concrete floor where there is regular foot traffic and light wheeled vehicle traffic
Solution: Solvent based standard floor paint. We supply two types: i) Decorating Warehouse Industrial bulk floor paint - 15 litresii) Johnstones trade standard floor paint - 5 litre (mixed to any RAL, BS or Johnstones colour) (Anti slip additive can be added to any of these paints to give greater anti slip properties)
Situation: Heavy industrial factories and warehouses where there is heavy traffic. Resistance to chemical spillages may also be required
Solution: The paint required in this instance is chemical curing, 2 pack epoxy floor paint. We supply the Johnstones trade product.
Situation: External concrete floor where anti-slip properties are important like car parks and wheelchair ramps.
Solution: We supply Coo-var Suregrip which fills these requirements
Situation: The floor paint needs to be quick drying and be low odour. This may be the case for schools and other public places.
Solution: i) Light Traffic - Johnstones standard water based floor paint
ii) Heavy Traffic - Johnstones water based 2 pack epoxy floor paint
3. Application Products
Generally, the most practicle and efficient way to paint a floor is by using a 9" - 15" roller frame with a medium pile roller sleeve and attaching theframe to an extension pole. You will also need a paint tray or scuttle to keep the paint in. This method will paint the bulk of the floor relatively quickly but may not reach all the edges. A 2" - 4" paint brush can be used to cut in to the edges to finish the job offnicely.
4. The painting process
For most projects, 2 coats are recommended to provide a good finish. There is usually no need for a primer or sealer, you can just thin down the first coat of floor paint by around 10% (with white spirit or relevant thinners for solvent based or water for water based paint). This will seal the surface. Then a full coat should be applied on top of the first coat after it is completly dry and this should create the desired outcome. Before any painting commences, please carefully read the manufacturers data sheet. This will give details of the correct temperatures to apply, coverage rate and application process. We always recommend to paint a test patch before any job.
