How To Paint Aluminium Windows And Doors

There can be no denying that some of the popularity of aluminium windows and doors

lies in their extreme durability and resistance to the elements, but the silver colour can be somewhat of a turn off for many homeowners. Whilst many companies today offer their aluminium with an attractive powder coating, this is of no help to those homeowners who had their doors and windows installed a number of years ago. In these cases, painting the frames in a colour that complements the rest of the home is a good idea.

The first step in the process is to prep your aluminium windows and doors. To do this, you will need to give them a thorough clean to remove any dirt or debris that will prevent the paint from taking to the surface. To make a cleaning solution, mix together some powdered soap (the kind that you use in your washing machine is fine) with some warm water. After wiping down the frames with a clean cloth, give them a rinse down with the hose and leave to dry for at least 48 hours. To protect the glass or wood in your doors and windows, cover any surfaces adjoining the frames with masking tape and lay drop clothes out on the ground immediately below.

The second step in the process is to apply a metal etching primer to the aluminium frames, making sure that you use a latex paintbrush. If you are painting your windows and doors to a tight deadline, you could add about half a litre of paint thinner to ever 4 litres of primer to help it take to the metal and dry faster. The primer is essential in ensuring that the paint of your choice will take to the aluminium. You will need to leave the doors and windows to dry for at least 4 hours.

The third (and final) step in the process is to begin painting your aluminium windows and doors with an acrylic latex paint in the colour of your choice (use the same latex paintbrush that you used fro the primer, thoroughly rinsed). You will need to leave the paint to dry for at least two hours once you have finished, and you may even want to apply additional coats to ensure an even and smooth coverage. Once the paint is completely dry, you can remove the masking tape for the surfaces around the frame and pack away your drop clothes. Your doors and windows are now ready to be admired.
