Once you learn to play ten to fifteen basic chords, you will be able to play any of the thousands of songs whether they are rock, country or pop. Open chords are much easier to play than the advanced chords are. The more advanced chords are the Barre chords, or chords that are played much further up the neck of the guitar.

The major and minor chords are: A Major, A Minor, C, D, Dm, E, Em, F, G. These chords are best done as chord "families" or by "key", which can be combined into some beautiful chord sequences, which most of the popular songs are played with. So, basically, you can learn how to play any guitar chord quite easily, and when you get them down, you can play almost anything.
