Find a Playstyle You Can Master

Most players obsess over head shots, but you know what? A kill is a kill. You may be more of a fan of grenades, ambushes or going stealth and then shotgunning your enemies to death. Find a style that works for you. The fact is that the older you get, the slower your reflexes, so if you're not a kid anymore, you're going to need to play smart to get an edge over all those teenagers out there. Find something that works for you, strategies and tactics that suit you best, and become the top dog in your own style.

Know Which Advice to Follow

If someone is calling you a noob and so on and so forth, they're usually just upset that you killed them using a style they're unaccustomed to. On the other hand, if a team member is actually giving you helpful advice, LISTEN TO THEM. Everyone wants to be the big shot when they join in the game, but if you're still kind a rookie, you need all the help you can get.

The Best Weapon is a Good Teammate

Your team is everything (in the team based modes, that is), so be a good sport and treat'em right. Follow team objectives, don't run off on your own trying to glory-hog and rack up kills when there's a flag that needs defending. Protect your teammates when they're in danger, and they'll protect you. Don't be one of those self obsessed, hot dogging geeks who's okay at the game, but useless to their team. Lone wolves don't usually get very far in the team based modes. So if you want to be a valuable player, be a valuable teammate, first and foremost, even if that means taking a back seat to your team captain.

Now, again, the skill ladder gets pretty tough. Don't expect to be playing in top rank servers on your first week of play. Find people at your own skill level, but keep challenging yourself. Don't just waste scrubs all day, that's too easy. Play with people who are on the same level as yourself, play for fun, and enjoy yourself, win or lose. Be a good sportsman, because why bother playing games if they just tick you off?
