In the process of learning to how to play tennis

, one should understand the sport in relation to the scoring system and method of playing. Serving is an important aspect of the game. Learning to serve properly helps win most of the points. The action of serving is meant to give the server an advantage (both for stroke-making and time needed to adjust to a better position). Let us find out more about tennis basics and how to play tennis for beginners.

Tennis for Beginners

The game of tennis relies heavily on how you serve. Just like catches win matches in cricket, the same is true with respect to aces in tennis. An ace is a serve (often forceful) which is fast and placed in a way that cannot be returned by the opponent. Now, let us understand how play tennis for beginners by understanding about serving and other aspects of the game, through paragraphs given below. The information about basic tennis rules should be useful for beginners.

Serving

To serve the tennis ball, one has to stand behind the baseline. All the instructions presented below, take into account the position of a left-handed server.

One has to stand behind the baseline and take a sideways stance.

Right hand should be used for tossing up the ball. Racket should be held in the left hand.

Ball has to be thrown straight upwards; the height up to which the ball should be thrown is ideally, 18 inches. The ball should not be tossed overhead, but, from a distance that is 1 feet ahead of the right leg (which is nearest to the baseline).

The tennis ball needs to be served diagonally opposite, in the box on the opponents court. Serving the ball from the highest possible point that one can reach, is recommended. It helps in increasing the success rate of the serve. Service is one of the most important aspect of the tennis; it is the first step on how to play tennis for beginners and has to be mastered.

Returning and Rallies

The tennis ball, as mentioned above, should fall in a specific place while serving. However, the return shot is not bound by any such restriction. One can return/place the shot in any portion of the opponent's court. In a singles match, however, the ball should not fall in the stripes at the sides of the court. There are roughly, two types of strokes in tennis i.e. ground strokes and volley shots. The ground strokes are played from the baseline while, for playing the volley shots, one has to approach the net. A lob shot is played over the head of opponent who approaches the net. Playing this shot causes the opponent to run back and take control of the shot. It gives the player a lot of time to think; also the shots returned after running back are not very powerful. Thus, a player gains advantage over the opponent by playing lob shots. However, if one doesn't play the lob shot properly (over the opponent), the opponent gets an opportunity to smash the ball. The knowledge of tennis court dimensions and tennis terms should prove to helpful.

Forehand and Backhand

The forehand and backhand are shots classified on the basis of the way in which the racket is held. When the racket is held in a manner that palm faces towards the ball, the stroke is known as forehand. Backhand is a shot played by holding racket in a way that palm faces away from the ball. Once a player understands the basics he can go for an advanced training course to in order to learn how to play better tennis. Here is some useful information on rules of the games.

Scoring System

To understand the game of tennis, it is important that one is aware of the scoring system.

Match: A tennis match with respect to the scoring rules, is divided in either 3 or 5 sets. If it is a 3-set match one has to win 2 of them, while it is necessary to win 3 sets in a 5-set match.

Set: To win a single set, one has to win a minimum of 6 games. However, if the score is 6-5/5-6, the player with a score of 6 has to win another game in order to increase difference between the games by 2. In a situation where the set is tied at 6-6, tie-breaker is used. The player who wins the tie-breaker bags the set.

Game: The scoring system/pattern in a game is 15/30/40/game. It means that instead of the normal scoring pattern of 1/2/3/game the 15/30/40/game is used. When the score ties at 40-40, the score is called as 'deuce'. One who scores a point after the deuce, arrives at a point called 'advantage'. If the player with an advantage wins another point, he bags the game. If the player after gaining advantage, loses the next point, the scores go back to the deuce.

Tie-breaker Game: In the tie-breaker game, the 15/30/40/game pattern is not followed; instead, a simple pattern of 1/2/3... and so on, is used. To win the tie-breaker game, one has to score minimum 7 points. However, if the score is 6-7/7-6, the game continues further until it is won by a difference of two points. It is only in the matches played in at Wimbledon, that the tie-breaker cannot be used for the decider (5th) set. Knowledge about tennis rules and regulations apart from those mentioned above, should be useful.

The basics about how to play tennis for beginners are discussed and tennis scoring explained in the article above. There many things which need to be learned in order to play better tennis. Tennis for beginners may appear to be simple, however, is one of the most (physically and mentally) demanding sports. Apart from learning all the techniques and skills, maintaining energy levels to execute them (techniques), is of utmost importance. Those, who want to play tennis on a professional level should therefore, be well prepared to face the best opponents.
