How To Pose: Tips For Beginner Models

Being a professional model isn't just about being beautiful

. An equally important skill is learning how to strike the right poses for your model photo shoots. Successful photos depend on body awareness and making poses look natural and effortless.

A dedicated, professional model takes modeling seriously by studying and working on the craft. Learn from the experts by compiling poses you like from magazines and professional photos. Analyze each photo, noting what the model does with each part of the body, what the model is wearing, and the model's body language and facial expressions.

Try to imitate the poses, practicing in front of a mirror where you can easily make alterations to accomplish the perfect pose. The more practice you have in certain poses, the more naturally you can enter and stay in those poses. This is why many photographers prefer that models take initiative and arrive prepared with their own poses during photo shoots.

Pay attention to the following 6 features of your posing style:

Posture

Most of us don't naturally have good posture because of our daily habits. Pay attention to your back. It should normally be upright and straight but not so that you look too stiff. Slight slouching can often give the pose a more natural feel, such as when you lean in toward the camera, but too much slouching becomes hunching, which can make you look insecure (not to mention, hunching can make your stomach protrude). Drop your shoulders if you want to elongate your neck to make you look slightly taller. Tuck in your stomach to look more toned or emphasize how toned you are.

Eye gaze

Looking directly at the camera can provide intensity and drama to the shot, looking upward can express annoyance while looking off to the side can create an air of mystery about you. Experiment by slowly tilting your head in different directions and letting your eye gaze naturally follow. You may be surprised by the variety of emotions you can portray with just your eyes. The "look" is needed for the photo to come alive.

As a side note, avoid blinking whenever possible. In fact, try to only blink between exposures. If you are focusing on your pose, you can often bypass thinking about the flash.

Breathing

Being the center of attention, models can spontaneously tense up and this can lead to holding your breath. When you hold your breath, your body automatically stiffens, making the shot look uncomfortable for you. Try to achieve natural, steady breathing through the photo shoot to keep yourself relaxed.

Limbs

Any joints in your body should at least be slightly bent to create shape in the photo. This includes your arms, legs and wrists. Straight limbs make you look awkward and rigid.

Facial Expression

Your smile is usually what makes a photo marketable, but a professional model will be able to express the full range of emotions. Try out smaller smiles, laughing, serious expressions, pouts and even frowns. As you try out the different facial expressions, let your body naturally follow, so your body language matches the intended emotion.

Asymmetry

Symmetrical poses look artificially generated. Models need to practice natural asymmetry in the overall body presentation, limbs and face. Typically, your body should be at about a 45-degree angle to the camera instead of straight on. You can create diverse lines with your limbs by changing the angles that they're bent. Finally, avoid pointing your nose toward the camera. Instead, set your face at an angle, especially if you have an impressive jaw line.
