Families get their pet from a breeder, a shelter, a rescue, an adoption drive outside a store, a friend, or from a pet store. Once the dog comes home the fun and excitement lasts just up until the third or fourth accident in the house. When this happens it is time to get serious about how to potty train the dog.

Many dog owners struggle with how to potty train a dog. The Internet is filled with information about housetraining and many soon realize there are lots of methods for training. There is clicker training, crate training, paper training, and others. Dog owners ask what for the right way to potty train the dog.

The answer is there is no right training method. The best training method is the method which works with the owners schedule and the dogs personality. If an owner is out of the house for the majority of the day, then crate training may be the most appropriate. However, if one works from home using command training and positive reinforcement, this may work. Regardless of which training method used, it is important that a few things be done consistently when trying to potty train a dog.

The best thing an owner can do when trying to potty train is to remember that one is building a relationship with the dog at the same time. This relationship is an important step because it builds trust between the owner and the dog. A dog that trusts an owner tends to respond better to training. A dog that trusts will also look towards its owner to see if the dog is doing the right thing. This will lead to faster training.

In trying to potty train a dog it is important to choose one method and stick with that one. Switching from crate training to paper training can be confusing. If crate training is the chosen method, it must be used all the time and not just when the owner leaves the house. Owners will at times feel despair especially if many accidents occur. This is not a reason to switch training methods, but instead pay more attention to the current method and the dog.
