Then take a thin pry bar and try to work it under the side stop some where in the middle from the back side closest to where the wooden sashes are. You pry from the back side so you don"t damage the trim, and you do it from the middle to take the pressure off the ends of the back stop. . When you get the middle of the stop free you might want to pull at the middle to release more pressure while you try to pry the top or bottom of the stop off Once you have the back stop off there may be some trim nails in the back stop. The best thing to do is grab a pair of Channel locks, and from the back side grab the nail down by the wood and roll the channel locks and pull the nail out from the back. don"t hammer the nail back through the front, you will probably splinter the wood and blow off big chunks of paint. . If you do it this way it"s going to save you a lot of time fixing all the damage you did when you put the trim back on later. OK take off the header, that"s the top piece. Use the same technique to take it off, start on the back side and in the middle. Next grab the rope of the bottom sash and cut it with a knife and then lower the into the pocket, . Next is the parting bead, its a small piece of wood that separates the bottom sash from the top sash. It runs from top to bottom and is usually about 3/8" x " it gets installed into a rabbit. Just take a thin chisel or a thin straight edge screwdriver and hammer it in at the middle right beside the parting bead and try to pop it out. Next grab the top sash, cut the ropes and drop them into the weight pocket. At this point we have both sashes out, if you have an old storm window you should take it off now. In a typical wood sash opening there should be four pulleys, two on each side at the top, take them out as well so that the new upvc window will not hit them when your putting them in the opening later on. At this point you should have a clear opening, its not unusual to have some random old weatherstripping or shade brackets left behind make sure you take all that stuff off, old nails, screws, etc. On both sides of the old window sash frame there is a little trap door so to speak its a bout two inches by eighteen inches long and is held in by a single screw. Behind that door is the area that the weights go up and down, it can be around 5" x 4" and runs the length of the window opening from top to bottom. When you take those trap doors off, pull out the old weights and get rid of them. This area must be insulated, its not easy, your going to have to stuff fiberglass insulation through that little weight pocket opening all the way up to the top. Insulating this area will have a major impact on how well the upvc window pro forms later. In some instances where the exterior ceasing is loose you could insulate from the out side and re nail the casing on after. Whether or not you insulate from the outside, you should check the outside casing to see if it needs to be re nailed very important!
