How To Prepare Copper And Aluminium Scrap Metal For Recycling
It is a good practice to recycle scrap metal like copper and aluminium for environment
. These days, awareness of recycling scrap metals is increasing and more and more people are joining the trend. In fact, many people have made it a part time business that adds few bucks to their monthly income. But for a novice it is a bit difficult because all scrap metal products are not being purchased and also you cannot take them to the scrap dealer or recycling company in their original form. So you must know how to prepare your waste metal products before taking them to the recycler.
Know the difference
There are two types of scraps metal Ferrous and Nonferrous. Ferrous includes used construction materials, pipes, plates, tubes, and wiring, and materials from old boats, cars, railcars and railroads. On the other hand nonferrous scrap metal includes motors, compressors and air conditioning units; electrical equipment and computer mainframes; copper and aluminum scraps from cable, wire and tubing; industrial material and equipment. Know the type of scrap you have so that you can tell your dealer at the time of dealing. Also mention what scrap you have and whether they are acceptable if you are expecting some money for this. Often, recyclers reject certain types of metal products like pans and pots, and only accept nonferrous metal scrap.
Sort type of scrap
If you are planning to sell them, make sure you sort out high worth material aside. Usually, nonferrous scraps cost higher than ferrous material. Identify them and then separate them from the rest, because if you mix them all you might lose your actual earning. For example, if you have copper/aluminium wire or cable, strip them to get better price. For convenience you can buy wire stripper, but buy only if you have a lot of wires to strip or you are into this business, otherwise it would not be worth spending on stripper.
Separate plastic/wood from metal
Recycler would not buy scrap which is attached with other material. You can sell everything, be it stoves, dryers, washing machine, dish washer, refrigerators, air conditioners, water heater and even a toasters. But you have to separate metal and plastic part. You may not succeed separating them completely but you can try as much as you can. Many recyclers accept scrap as long as they have 80% metal part.
Take proper precautions
Whilst nonferrous scrap copper and aluminium fetches good money they can be dangerous to work with. It is better not to attempt to take apart electronic items as they can be made of recycled material that can produce gas like gallium, gold and arsenic from electronics that can cause serious health damage. Until and unless you have proper precautionary measures never try to work with nonferrous items.
