How To Prepare To Leave Home And Go To College

Getting ready for college is both terrifying and exhilarating

. Believe me, I have been there. I lived in the same house with my parents for my entire life until it was time to move four hundred miles away to attend a small private school in southern California.

But if you make some preparations on your own and some decisions in sync with your family, the transition can have fewer anxieties than necessary. This will also help you to be better able to handle the challenges ahead and make responsible decisions on your own.

First off, you and your parents need to make some serious financial decisions. Hopefully, you have the logistics of paying for your tuition worked out. But after that, you should decide on living arrangements and how they will be financially handled.

You should have a serious discussion to ensure that all expectations are clarified. Do your parents insist that you get a job, or will they be supplementing your income if you keep your grades up?

Make sure you know exactly what is expected of you. If your ideas are not in harmony with your parents', try to find a way to compromise, and NEVER act entitled.

Some parents allow their children to have a credit card linked to their account. If your mother and/or father have given you their privilege, don't go overboard. Earn your parents' trust through being consistently responsible.

In the summer before you leave for school, try to work as much as you can. Try to use your paychecks toward expenses for your dorm or apartment so that your family members don't have to foot the entire bill. You will also want to set a little aside on a regular basis to pay for those expensive college textbooks.

You may feel the need to spend as much time as you possibly can with all of your friends before you all move away to new places. This is not a negative thing, but you should remember that your family will miss you just as much--if not more--than any of your other associates. So allot quality time with parents and siblings and even extended family before you go.

As you start packing, you need to clean out the clutter. Now that you are starting a new chapter of your life, it's time to let go of some of the things you just don't need anymore. Sell video games, old books, CDs, and other items that will go unused.

Above all, remember that this is a hard time for your family, too. Try to be understanding and show your love as they support you in your big next step in life.
