How To Preserve The Historic Touches In Your Barn

Many of us have the romantic notion of living in a restored Victorian house or even a barn

. Romance is nice, but here are some realistic tips you should know before attempting renovations.

As with any property, the rule is "Location, location, location." If you see a building you'd like to restore, think about where it is. If the area is in a country place and the building suits the neighborhood, it might be worthwhile t save it. However, if the city is encroaching on a country barn, think about the area will look in ten years.

Also be sure the property is adequate. For example, is the building on high ground so as to avoid flooding? Is the structure located far enough from the road to be safe? Are there overhanging tree branches that could come crashing down in a storm? Has there ever been a fire in the structure? These are all important factors to consider.

Also, as you examine the condition of the building, consider what activities you will be doing within the structure. If you plan to live in a decrepit home with kids and pets who like to roughhouse, it may be more trouble than it is worth to shore up the floors, walls and ceilings to stand up to everyday abuse.

Be sure to thoroughly inspect the structure, especially the roof, the foundation and plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems. If these have not been well maintained, you will have to spend a lot of time and money getting them up to code.

If the structure was not originally planned as a home, you have some other factors to consider. If the building was a barn, make sure all traces of animals have been thoroughly swept away, including hay and droppings. Barns are notorious for harboring wild critters as well. Take steps to make sure there have been no infestations.

Restoring old buildings can be a very lengthy and expensive process. Be sure you plan your move well. Be sure you have adequate finances to pay for the renovations and that you and your family have someplace to live while the renovations are taking place.

You may find it enjoyable to do some of the work yourself. But be sure you know how to do it. Work done incorrectly can affect the safety of the structure. There are many contractors who specialize in restoration work. Check references carefully to be sure you are getting good contract help. Sadly, a few bad apples have made it necessary for the rest of us to be extra cautious when hiring contractors.

Restoring an older building can be a great adventure if you properly plan things out. Be patient and you will soon be living in a one-of-a-kind building that will be the envy of your neighborhood.
