*Poor shoes. If your shoes do not offer the proper ventilation or effectively absorb perspiration, fungus will be more likely to survive and grow under your toenail.

Treatments For Fungal Toenails

Depending on how severe your fungal infection is, there are a few different treatment options that you can undergo. There are various over the counter creams and ointments available to you, but they are generally not as effective as prescribed medications from your podiatrist. When you visit your podiatrist, he or she will usually prescribe either an oral medication, topical cream or both. Oral medications are usually administered for six to twelve weeks. They allow for a new nail to grow in without any infection. Because of this, they work very slowly to remove the infection.

Another way your dentist may be able to get rid of your fungal infection is through the use of a laser. Fungal laser treatment works by shining an infrared laser directly onto your toenail for 10-20 minutes. The laser penetrates the nail and eliminates the infection, without causing you any pain or discomfort. After treatment, your nail will begin to grow in without any infection. After two to four months, your nail will have grown back fully without any infection.
