How To Prevent Blanket Weeds From Lurking In Your Ponds

Blanket weeds grow briskly in ponds where sunlight

, nutrients, and heat are free and overflowing. They are multi-celled and filamentous algae that settle on the surface of the pond and water inlets such as waterfalls. The abundance of blanket weed is damaging for it can smother plants and fish life. It blankets the pond with green and gruesome debris that are totally disgusting. Whats worse is it can suffocate fish because it acquires most supply of oxygen at night.

Removing blanket weeds can be terrible and painstaking. These filamentous algae thrive in the environment unknown to man and other living things. Theres no easy way in eliminating the growth of blanket weeds in ponds, but prevention is always better than cure. Here are some methods on how to prevent blanket weeds from pestering your pond:

Shading

Blanket weeds and other types of filamentous algae depend on sunlight to speed up their development. The sunlight supplies nutrients to complete the process of blanket weeds photosynthesis. Taking this into consideration, you can opt for a simple process that is worth the time and budget

Shading is a proven effective prevention for blanket weed problems. Mounting pergola at the top or within the surface of the pond can help lessen the heat coming from the sun. The pergola can also prevent the falling debris like branches and dead leaves from getting into the pond. Otherwise, planting aquatic or floating plants (water lilies, hyacinths, lotus, and etc) is advisable, especially in sun drenched areas. These plants huge and succulent leaves swathe the pond, and serve as covering for its inhabitants. Their roots also give off oxygen for the consumption of most aquatic plants and animals. Whereas, floating plants like water lilies are responsible for the shrinkage of nitrates. Nitrates are important substances that promote the blanket weeds growth.

Have you ever heard of vegetable dye? If not, vegetable dyes are used to provide artificial covering in the pond against sunlight. When diluted in water, vegetable dye gives water a dark blue tint that reduces the amount of sunlight.

Bacteria Treatment

Did you know that not all bacteria are harmful to the pond? These types of bacteria are called beneficial bacteria. . Bacteria found to be advantageous to the pond are Azotobacter, Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Chaetomium genera. The good or beneficial bacteria reduce ammonia, nitrates, starch, phosphates, and proteins crucial for the growth of filamentous algae. Otherwise, using bacteria treatment is not an immediate remedy for blanket weed removal, because it will take them for few weeks or months to become effective. Also, the beneficial bacteria need oxygen to survive that is why it is crucial to have a running or circulating water in the pond.

Avoid Overfeeding Fish

Overfeeding fish can raise the ammonia to high levels. Keep in mind that the fish population in the pond is as not concentrated as natural lakes do, so its important not to overfeed fish. Always pour enough amounts of feeds in the pond to prevent the fish from secreting dangerous ammonia.
