How To Prevent Fire-Related Accidents in the Workplace

According to UK statistics published in 2009, there were 385

,000 incidents of fires, and 443 fire-related deaths throughout the UK. Although there has been a decreasing trend in fire-related accidents, these figures show that compliance with fire safety regulations still cannot guarantee 100% safety in all instances. Accidents occur anytime and at any place, which is why business owners, managers, and supervisors should not let their guards down and ensure that their buildings, business premises, or construction sites are fully protected from fires both inside and out. Here are a few easy ways to prevent fire-related accidents in the workplace.

Design the structure with fire safety in mind

Existing fire safety regulations in the UK have various requirements for builders that cover all activities starting from the construction site itself, the actual design of the building, the materials to be used, and the like. Given that there are laws covering these, any business can only be granted a permit to operate if the structure has been certified to be fire-proof and compliant with the fire safety regulations. For example, the use of fireproof materials is mandated, so is the planning of a proper fire escape route, ventilation for areas where chemicals are used, wiring restrictions, and so on.

Equip the structure with firefighting equipment

The next way with which fire-related accidents can be prevented is through the installation of firefighting equipment throughout the building premises. These include fire extinguishers that are appropriate for the type of materials being used within the area. For example, industrial kitchens need to be equipped with Foam or C02 fire extinguishers since these are especially made for putting out fires caused by oil or grease. Electrical plants, on the other hand, must be equipped with dry powder extinguishers. Other equipment can also be installed, such as fire alarms and dorgard spares to prevent jamming of fire exit doors, to name a few.

Regularly monitor the conditions of the equipment

Although having the abovementioned equipment installed in the business premises can secure the safety of the occupants, this can be enhanced by periodical checking of the working conditions of the equipment. For example, fire alarms with dead batteries cannot function at all when needed. In the same way, broken dorgard spares would not do its job well of keeping a fire edit open when it has to. Another example would be rushing to a fire extinguisher only to find out that it would not function properly because it has been damaged and not replaced. Thus, it is very important to check such equipment regularly to ensure that they are ready to use at all times.

Conduct fire safety training for all employees

Finally, fire safety regulations in the UK impose mandatory fire safety training for all employees working within a building, a construction area, a factory, and so on. Such training will provide all employees with crucial information they need to prevent fires or to react properly when a fire has become unmanageable. The fire safety training will also develop skills, such as those used in operating fire extinguishers, proper fire escape behaviours, and the like.
