How To Prevent Rust By Painting An Iron Fence

Iron fences are very difficult to damage physically

. They are strong and reliable, and most types of physical damage are no danger to them whatsoever. However, iron fences are vulnerable to one problem. If left unprotected, an iron fence will always rust. Rust is a serious problem that you cannot afford to ignore.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to remove once it gets a foothold. The best strategies for dealing with rust are all preventative, so if you have an iron fence that is not protected against rust, you should be in a hurry to fix this problem. Luckily, a simple coat of paint can protect your iron fence against rust for years, even though it may only take a few hours to apply.

To paint an iron fence, you will need cans of spray paint and fine grained sandpaper. You can substitute a more complex and professional spray painting system if you have one, but it is not necessary to do so. Additionally, you will need your fence to be clean, so you will also need soap and water, or whatever your preferred materials are for cleaning your iron fence.

To start off, sand your fence lightly with your sandpaper to remove any old paint or coatings. Next, get your fence nice and clean using your preferred method. Once your fence is clean, it is ready to paint. Before you begin, read the instructions on your spray can and follow them if they differ from these instructions.

Begin by shaking your spray can for a few seconds. Next, hold your spray can about a foot from your iron fence. Pull the trigger on your spray can and apply the paint to your iron fence. Do not hold the spray can in one place. Instead, move it back and forth. Do not apply paint to areas you have already painted.

When you are finished applying paint to your iron fence, sit back and wait for it to dry. If you have used your spray paint correctly, you will have a light coat of paint, without ever allowing enough paint to build up that it forms droplets.

After your paint dries, it is a good idea to apply a second coat of it. This will give your fence a stronger color, as well as more complete protection. Additionally, most spray paint is formulated with the basic assumption that you will be applying multiple coats.
