How To Program A Dubstep Beat

The first thing you want to do to get started with making a Dubstep beat is use a studio that is most suited to your level of experience. Once you have your program ready to go:

1. So open a new session in your sequencer and find yourself some suitable drum sounds. Two producer friends of mine always argue of how this should be done; where one like to quickly smash out the beat with any old (temporary sound) while he is inspired and do back and pick sounds later. Where the other likes to stop and choose all the sounds as he goes along.

The latter is not very productive and not recommended as while you have the motivation and inspiration, I would recommend the program the beat with the first sounds you lay eyes on and produce it later, (choosing sounds etc).

2. Set your tempo to say, around 140BPM and open all your new tracks. You if you must, you can add your reverb and or EQ now, just to get a feel for it, though remember to slap it on individual tracks so it can be altered separately, as opposed to adding it to the whole mix.

3. Add your kick. We are going to place them on the 1st, 4th and 9th beats in the sequencer.

4. Next comes the snare drum. Place a snare hit on beat 3, 7 and 13 and 16 in the sequencer, If your software permits, shorten the length of the snare at number 7 and 16. It will sound snapier when your done.

5. So your Hi-Hats are going to placed in next. At your hats to beats 3, 6, 9, 11, 14 and 15. Maybe make 9 and 14 a hi-hat "suck" later if you like.

Ok, so this is a generic guide to programming a Dubstep beat in any sequencer and is the beat only. Once you beats are in place, then start producing the beat further. Add effects, choose your sounds and tailor it to the vide your hoping to achieve. Just mess around with it and have fun.
