How To Properly Paint A Room
As easy as it may sound, painting a room can take a lot of preparation and time to do
. Painting a room properly and making it look the best it can be involves certain steps and procedures. You may want to look into getting a
free painting estimate or you might just want to take on the duty of doing it yourself.
The first step to painting a room is to take out all furniture and wall decorations. Then, cover up anything that you don't want to get paint on. This would include the floor and outlets around the room. After that, you want to sand down the surfaces you wish to paint (this includes the ceiling). Make sure to wear a dust mask so that the debris does not get into your nose or mouth. Apply medium pressure to the walls and switch the sand paper whenever it becomes clogged or dull. When you are completely done sanding, vacuum up the room and wash the walls down with water and a sponge. You don't want to paint over the loose debris still on the wall.
The next step is filling in gaps and holes around the room. Run a thin line of caulk over any gaps where the molding meets the wall. Sometimes you might need to use your finger to push the caulk into the cracks. Then, take a putty knife and patch up any holes in the walls. You can use patching compound or joint compound depending on what type of walls you have. You then want to go back and sand again, after you have finished patching up any problems. Sand until it's smooth then wipe down with a sponge and water.
You are now ready to paint! Before you bust out your roller though, go around the room and cut in all the corners with a small paint brush. This would include areas such as corners or right up against the molding. That way, once you are ready to lay the paint on thick, you don't have to worry about the roller hitting all the corners. When you are ready to paint the entire wall itself, dip the roller in the paint and move it back and forth until the paint is evenly dispersed around the entire roller. Squeeze out any excess and paint away!
The last step in this process is painting the trim of the room. Use a wide, straight-edged brush to paint the bulk of the trim then use a small angled brush to paint a straight line along the edge. As you can see, painting a room is not a hard task. It just takes a lot of groundwork and time to make sure you are being as precise as you possibly can be. If you would rather not do it yourself, you can get an
interior painting quote and have someone do it for you. However, refer back to these steps when you are looking to remodel a room in your house!
