How To Properly Replace A Broken Glass
When your single-pane window gets broken, you should replace them as soon as possible
. Here are what you need and what you should do when you want to replace a broken pane in your wooden-frame window:
First, here are the things that you need: heavy gloves, safety glasses, putty knife, replacement glass, glazing compound, Glazier's points, wood primer, paint brush and paint. You have to prepare these things before you start replacing the broken glass window. Again, don't forget to use heavy gloves and goggles to protect yourself from being cut or hurt.
1. First, thing to remember is to always work from the outside. Start removing all the loose glass. Then, start removing the dried glazing compound found on the edge of your window pane. Do this with the use of a putty knife. However, if it's difficult to remove, you can heat the area with the use of a hair dryer. You may also use a heat gun if you have one. Another option is to soak it in linseed oil for 1 hour or so. You may also use a small chisel if your putty knife is not strong enough to remove the dried glazing compound.
2. Then, remove the metal glazier's points that hold the glass within the frame. Also, you should pry out dried putty as well as dried paint found on the frame. Once this is done, you should brush the frame to completely clean it. You can then start painting it with primer.
3. Then, to get the dimensions of the glass that you need to buy, you should measure the dimensions of the window opening. Then, deduct 1/8 from the width and the height. Also make sure you get the thickness of the glass. When you already have all these information, you can go to the glass store and find a replacement.
4. Once you have purchased the glass, all you have to do is to place it into the window frame. Press it gently within the frame and secure it using new glazing points. With the use of a putty knife, push the glazing points into the wood frame. Gently do this and avoid applying too much pressure on the glass.
5. Then, start applying generous amount of glazing compound on the edges of the window frame. You can use your putty knife to smooth it too.
6. Let it dry for 1 week or so. You can prime and then paint it with whatever color you want. Don't let anyone touch it until it's fully dry.
