How To Properly Wear A Short

In my recent roving's I bumped into an old lady friend and we decided to have chat

over coffee and of course catch up on each others life and in the course of our discussion she made some interesting comments about the man she was dating and it all had to do with some unfortunate fashion mistakes he committed.

She was passionate about her relationship and described her man as having very nice legs, you know the very muscular, well toned athletic type, but the only problem she had with those great legs and her hubby is that he always wore extra shorts shorts, you get the picture!

As she put it, the shorts were not the Due styled cuts offs popularly worn by the Left lieutenant Jim on Reno 911, and neither were they those odd running shorts favored by thin speed walkers. My friend's guy was more into the Tom Selleck la Magnum type. And our men and shorts talk got me thinking about the shorts do's and don't and here I bring you a list.

I'll first begin with the blunders

Unless you're a golfer please stay away from pleated shorts. If you resort to wearing pleated shorts then accompany them with a nice pair of white shoes and black socks. With the addition of a walker, you've got the old folk vibe perfectly down with such a peculiar selection.

Please reserve and I repeat reserve athletic/gym shorts for the gym and exercise only, they're not meant for strolling around town, to a dinner out or even worse never use them on a date, unless you want to scare your date to death. Irrespective of your lovely looking legs or jump shot prowess, just leave them for the gym.

It's cool to wear them when relaxing at home but not more than that.

Jeans shorts are unsightly

Popularly known as jorts or cut offs, jean shorts are not appealing at all, the best they can do is create a fashion horror. Matters run out of hand if you put on a belt, tuck in your shirt or tee and clip your cell phone to your waist, horror! Want to put on jeans, then stick to a nice and decent pair of denims with a well pressed shirt and leather flip flops if you feel tempted to wear jeans during summer. The final product will be handsome and attractive.

Mind the cargo short pocket ratio.

There is a specific size of cargo pocket to age of wearer ratio to be aware of--the older the wearer, the smaller the pocket needs to be. The larger size pockets should peak in the teenage/college age set, then grow smaller until they disappear all together by the age of 50, generally speaking. It's sad but true.

Fashion Do's for guys

Do wear a nice flat front khaki short. Don't like khaki? Then opt for a nice olive, stone or navy color. You will look put together and stay cool and comfy. Any length from mid-thigh down to mid-knee is acceptable. A flat-front short looks great with a short sleeve button-down as well as a tee.
