How To Protect Your Crops From Being Ruined
There's nothing worse then your crops being destroyed by a diseased pest
. Valuable time and a lot of money go into developing crops and to see them go to waste is such a shame. Here are a few tips to help you avoid some of these problems next season.
1. Take care of your plants:
It is proven that well fed and healthy plants are less likely to become diseased.
2. Monitor your fields:
Scanning your land and vegetation for insects, weeds, and diseased plants on a regular basis is a good place to start.
3. Keep a close eye:
Don't just scan your land, write down what you see. Keep track of things like the size and types of insects you see, which plants are becoming infected by disease, the types of weeds growing, how much damage is being done and whether the problem is getting better or worse.
4. Develop a seasonal farming plan:
When the farming season is over, spend some of your free time going over what worked well last year and what you could have done better. From there make decisions about the types of plants you want to grow and how you are going to ensure their protection.
5. Crop rotation:
Something to bear in mind when developing your seasonal plan is that growing different crops in the same field improves their ability to withstand pests. If you are going to grow the same crops then it is best to wait four years before replanting.
6. Mulching:
Mulching helps crops grow, keeps soil moist, and stops weeds, insects and diseases from spreading.
7. Separating your plants:
Plant diseases are more likely to develop in wet areas. If plants have enough space between them to stay dry then they'll have a better chance of avoiding diseases.
8. If you do get a pest....
First try to get rid of it the natural way. Remember pesticides are poison and should only be used as a last resort. Natural methods include: surrounding the infected crop with pest resilient plants; burning the infected crop so that the disease doesn't spread; and using an enemy insect to go after the pest.
9. If larger animals such as rabbits and deer are the problem...
-First put up a fence that they aren't able to get over, and then take some thick wool and attach it to the top. Zig zag the wool over your crops all the way to the other side. This will help scare them away.
-Put human hair on your cornstalks: deer don't like the smell of human hair, so remove leftover strands from your brush and spread them over the field.
-Fruit cages: these are an effective method of defending crops from birds and animal pests.
Excessive sun can cause heat stress on plants. Sun shades can also be used for product packaging areas, barn coverings, and certainly over newly picked fruit.
