How To Protect Your Loved Ones From Nursing Home Abuse

Nursing home abuse is a crime that has been plaguing our country for too long

. In the name of profit, many nursing home owners have let go large percentages of their staff, and the facility's residents are suffering because of it.

After cutting staff numbers to the bone, these companies try to force their nurses to take care of an increasingly large number of patients. And they are requiring them to work longer hours for very little pay. Many residents of these homes are being neglected and abused as a result. They may be neglected because there are not enough qualified people to take care of them, and abused by staff members who are frustrated by the amount of responsibilities that have been foisted upon them.

There is no excuse for elder abuse. The people who are responsible for it should be punished. That means both the nurses as well as their employers.

If you have a relative who is currently a resident of a nursing home, there are a number of things that you can do to help to ensure that they will not become the victims of abuse.

The best thing that you can do is to be there to help your loved one in any way that you can.

This means that you should visit your loved ones as often as possible. While visiting, one of your goals should be to make the staff want to keep your relative as comfortable and as happy as possible. Try to help the nursing staff see your loved one as a person, not just as a job.

If your relative is still capable of talking coherently, find out if they have been experiencing any problems. Is their call button broken? Has it taken too long for the staff to get them things like glasses of water? Are they getting the attention that they are paying for and that they deserve?

It can be easy to assume that your loved one is exaggerating, but they very well may be telling the truth. In cases such as this, you should play it safe and talk with the nursing staff in order to make sure that your relative's needs are being properly taken care of.

You should also look out for other signs of abuse, such as mysterious injuries like broken bones or bruises. This could happen when frail elderly people don't feel they are getting the help that they need. They could get so worked up that they try to move around by themselves and end up falling.

However, they may have also been slapped, beaten by staff members, or actually strapped into their beds.

You shouldn't necessarily assume that there has been abuse at the first sign of an injury. But you should listen carefully when you ask how it happened. And watch out to see if they are inured again.
