How To Protect Your Privacy While On Vacation
If you are going on vacation, then you can happily look forward to some fun times ahead
. Vacations are something that people look forward to all over the world. Even if you are only visiting the next city over, it's going to be a good time. However, there are some dangers to traveling that you must address. One of the is your privacy. Many people don't realize that traveling can expose you to identity thieves. It's important to protect your identity as it is, let alone while you are on vacation. In this article, you'll learn some important tips to keep you and your identity safe while you are on vacation.
If you share photos, make sure your privacy settings are set correctly. Many people go on vacation, take a bunch pictures, and then upload them to their favorite photo sharing spots. Then they add in some details on the photos. Many experienced hackers can use this information, as well as the passwords on these photo sharing sites to hack into your other accounts. So when going on vacation, make sure set up a completely separate account for sharing photos.
If you've got any sensitive documents, like travelers checks, airline tickets, or anything else, make sure you lock them in the hotel safe. When you are choosing hotels, make sure to choose ones that have safes available. That way, you will be less likely to be robbed.
Make sure any digital devices you bring, such as cell phones, cameras, tablet or notebook computers are password protected. And make sure the password is different than the one you normally use. There's plenty of information some skilled thieves can get off your cell phone, so make sure they are blocked by a password.
Keep close tabs on your financial statements while traveling. Especially if you are paying for things with a credit card. Know how much you spend every day, and make sure this is the only thing that is getting added onto your account every day.
It might be tempting to bring your laptop, so you can update Facebook and watch all the movies you're taking, but avoid this temptation. This is too tempting of a target for thieves, as it can be a virtual treasure trove of private information. Stick to your smart phone when it comes to emailing friends and watching your home movies.
If you use public computers, like at libraries or Kinkos, make sure to log off completely. Otherwise, somebody can come and access your data. Log off all programs like email, and Facebook.
It's also not a good idea to update Facebook with all your vacation photos until you return home. If you update Facebook while you are away, it's basically an open invitation for thieves to come and rob you while you are away.
If you follow these tips, you should have a safe and enjoyable trip. Just use your head, and protect yourself whenever possible.
